Technical University of Denmark (DTU); Kongens Lyngby, Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipality, Denmark

     Deadline: November 10, 2024 | Published: September 23, 2024   12:37

Duties: The objective of the PhD study will be to evaluate risks of wind turbine blade failure and damage by increasing the blade sizes, up to extra-large wind turbine blades. With increasing wind turbine blade size, the likely damage mechanisms of wind turbine blades are changing. Torsion forces become stronger, leading to the possible blade, and buckling collapse. This leads to changes in main blade damage mechanisms, different m those observed in current blades and collected in failure reports. In this work, you will investigate mechanisms of damage of extra-large wind turbine blades, using the methods of computational mechanics and finite element modelling. You will develop computational models of wind turbine blade damage under the mechanisms specific for extra-large blades, including increased tip velocity and the larger role of torsional forces, and explore solutions to mitigate the damage risks
Requirements: Masters degree in materials science, applied mechanics, mechanics, mechanical engineering or related disciplines; Knowledge of finite element modelling (Abaqus) and scientific programming in a higher-level language (preferably Python)

Duties: We offer an attractive doctoral position in the context of the ATLAS project, funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) and GomSpace Luxembourg. Specifically, you will contribute to one of the space systems track of ATLAS, which concerns the automated assessment of Autonomous Satellite Operation Orchestrators (ASOOs). ASOOs automate tasks that, a few years ago, were performed manually to minimise costs and improve the quality of service. Unfortunately, physical constraints (e.g., orbits), continuous evolution (e.g., to achieve more autonomy), and the distributed nature of ASOOs make their validation and verification (V&V) costly, ineffective, and nearly infeasible. Our research will lead to a toolset capable of exercising the PUS and REST entry points of those systems, automatically setting up simulation environments, and automatically determining the correctness of execution results. To this end, we aim to combine meta-heuristic and fuzzing approaches with natural lang...
