Contemporary deep learning (DL) models excel in approximating complex functions by discovering fine-grained correlations among features. Yet, DL models struggle to generalize in out-of-distribution settings as they fall short in identifying causal relationships. This small project explores the possibility to construct a unified DL architecture supporting causal inference queries and thus producing more robust, explainable, and generalisable predictions. This architecture will combine Retrieval Augmented Generative techniques to learn a causal graph from the analysis of relevant scientific literature, and Deep Concept Reasoning models to infer structural equations making the underlying causal mechanisms explicit. The project will perform a preliminary exploration of this approach, with the aim of both testing its feasibility and scaling it to real-world applications

Candidates’ profile Ideal candidates should satisfy the following requirements: • Have obtained, or are close to obtaining, a master’s degree in artificial intelligence, computer science, physics, mathematics or related fields. PhD - • Strong programming skills (python, pytorch). • Strong background in machine and deep learning. • Interest in research topics related to causal inference, causal machine learning and large language models. • Previous experience in research, especially in the fields of causal - graphical modeling, pa gina 2 / 2 Contract terms • Fixed - term contract one year as Research Assistant (the actual contract of employment will depend on the academic background of the candidate) with 70% involvement. • Collaboration within a research project involving the People - Centered Computing Lab at the USI Computer Systems Institute and the Swiss AI Lab Dalle Molle Institute of Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA USI - SUPSI). • Work Desk at USI Computer Systems Institute . • Possibility to participate in international conferences and workshops, and to publish in international research journals. The successful candidates will work as Research Assistant at the Computer Systems Institute , and will have the possibility to interact with an international network of collaborators.
