The School of the Arts and Media , in the Faculty of the Arts, Design, and Architecture, teaches undergraduate, honours and postgraduate programs in Creative Writing, English, Film, Media, Music, and Theatre and Performance Studies. The School offers Bachelor and Master degrees in Media, with specialisations in Cinema Studies, Journalism and Communication; Media Studies, Public Relations and Advertising, and Screen Production. It also offers an interdisciplinary major in Media, Culture and Technology within the Bachelor of Arts. Many students undertake combined and joint degrees with a large range of UNSW degree offerings. All programs are in high demand, experiencing rapid growth, and attract students with high entry qualifications. Why Your Role Matters: The School of the Arts and Media is seeking a Lecturer Level B in Journalism and Communication to contribute to teaching and research in our media programs. You will have a strong national and international profile and specialised expertise in one or more of the following areas: data and interactive journalism, artificial intelligence in journalism, social media and journalism. Industry practice and experience will be essential; ideally, you will possess skills and experience across practice/research/theory. Experience and/or capacity to teach large courses at an introductory level in an area of journalism and communication or practice is required. You will be expected to undertake and produce high-level research in a relevant field of journalism and communication and be able to demonstrate a successful track record of grants and publications. In this role you will contribute to teaching relevant media courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and in the supervision of Honours and higher degree research students, and work closely with other members of the media academic and professional staff to further develop media course offerings. The role reports to the Head of School and has no direct reports. Specific accountabilities for this role include: Apply a well-defined teaching philosophy and a critically reflective teaching practice that inspires student learning. Coordinating and teaching courses within the School. Design and develop learning activities and resources and provide assessment and feedback at both course and program levels using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments. Manage course administration, including academic quality assurance. Maintain and develop links within the discipline industry and profession. Conduct high-quality, independent research in the field of journalism and communication, including producing international, peer-reviewed Q1 journal papers, chapters and books (and/or equivalent international, peer-reviewed non-traditional research outputs) and attracting Cat 1-4 external research funding. Skills and experience required for this position are: A PhD in journalism and communication or a related discipline. A background in journalism or related media industries. A record of proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments in the field of journalism and communication. Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design in the area of journalism and communication using a range of pedagogical approaches, including online and/or hybrid delivery methods, development and delivery of courses at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence and fostering this in others. Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to achieve research excellence continually.
