Position: Postdoc in ecophysiology and nutritional biology of soil invertebrates

Duties: The successful applicant will participate in the Department’s work on ecophysiology of soil invertebrates. The postdoc will investigate the suitability of Enchytraeus albidus (a small earthworm) as feed for fish in aquaculture, and carry out research that can facilitate mass production of this species. In particular, the applicant will investigate the lipid biochemistry and genomic background for de novo synthesis of omega-3 fatty acids in invertebrate species. The work includes studies of nutritional biology, mass rearing, lipid biochemistry and gene expression under laboratory conditions
Requirements: The successful applicant should have a PhD degree in Biological Science, and a proven track record of first-author peer-reviewed publications. Relevant research experience includes ecophysiology, molecular biology and general biology of invertebrates. The candidate should be enthusiastic about learning new techniques and able to work independently. Strong analytical skills, experience with laboratory studies of invertebrates or other ectotherms, and the ability to work in teams and communicate scientific work to international journals are expected

The position is linked to a collaborative project that explores the use of soil invertebrates as sustainable feed for juvenile fish in aquaculture. Expected start date and duration of employment This is a 2½-year position with an expected start on September 1st, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter. Depending on qualifications of the candidates, the postdoc position may be extended with a possibility to later transition into a tenure track position. Job description The successful applicant will participate in the Department’s work on ecophysiology of soil invertebrates. As part of the position, there will be an exchange visit of 6-12 months at the Instituto de Acuicultura Torre de la Sal, CSIC, Spain. Who we are The Department of Ecoscience is engaged in research programs and advisory work covering the major biological sub-disciplines. The Department currently employs approximately 275 academic and technical staff, as well as many PhD students. The candidate will work in the section for Terrestrial Ecology focusing on how plants, animals and their habitats are affected by natural conditions (climate and land use) as well as human activities (air pollution, pesticides, genetically modified plants, and various agricultural management systems) and how applied biological solutions can contribute to solving societal problems related to environmentally sustainable food and feed production.
