The Department of Statistics employs around 15 researchers, teachers, PhD students, and other staff. We conduct research within a number of areas, such as the analysis of high dimensional data, Bayesian methods, spatial-temporal models, non-Gaussian modelling, applied research in the social sciences, and stochastic models and computational statistics. Job assignment Doctoral students devote their time primarily to completion of course work and the writing of a doctoral thesis. The employment as a PhD student is granted on a yearly basis and the total period of employment may not exceed 4 years of full-time studies. Departmental duties, i.e., teaching, administration or research not directly connected to the dissertation topic, may amount to a maximum of 20% of full time. When such departmental duties are performed, the length of employment is extended accordingly. For further details, please visit https://stat-lu.github.io/PhdPos_2024/ Eligibility/Entry Requirements The employment of doctoral students is regulated in Swedish Code of Status 1998:80 A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she has: Been awarded a second-cycle degree; or Satisfied the requirements for courses comprising of at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle: or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge. (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7, Section 39) Other requirements MSc in mathematics, statistics, computer science, biostatistics, or physics (need not be finished in the time of the application). Meriting Some experience in spatial statistics, or numerical linear algebra. Some experience in programming and numerical methods skills (like familiarity with computing platforms such as Python, R, or C++ ). Basis of Assessment Admittance of a doctoral student is based on an assessment of the candidate’s ability to benefit from third-cycle studies. The applicant’s ability to benefit from third-cycle studies and research will be assessed with reference to the selection criteria stated in the relevant general syllabus for third-cycle studies, available at http://staff.lusem.lu.se/phd-studies/phd-programmes . Applicant’s general competence: Quality and content of previous written work, such as the Master’s thesis. Ability to participate actively in the Department’s research environment. Ability to perform independent work. Relevant educational background and a high grades/grade average in relevant subjects. Relevant work experience. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD- studies shall be the primary consideration. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research, and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance. The selection process will primarily consider the applicant’s ability as shown by a degree of competence in statistics, a potential to develop independent research and willingness to communicate with researchers across different disciplines. Emphasis is placed on the quality of the candidate’s master’s thesis or of other research reports. Terms of employment Fixed-term employment, maximum four years (fulltime studies). Only those admitted to third-cycle courses and study programs at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral.
