Applicants must have a DVM (or equivalent) and be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice in the Province of Ontario. The applicant must be a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS). Applications may also be considered from candidates who have completed an ACVS-approved residency training program and are eligible for examination by the ACVS. A graduate research degree and experience in research and teaching are desirable. The ideal candidate should have strong skills in the clinical practice of small animal surgery and outstanding teaching and communication skills. The successful candidate will work with four other board-certified surgeons covering orthopedic and soft tissue surgery and board-certified specialists in medicine, anesthesiology, critical care, diagnostic imaging, oncology, ophthalmology, neurology, nutrition, and cardiology to provide didactic and clinical instruction in small animal surgery and related disciplines to veterinary students, interns, residents and graduate students. Much of your effort will be dedicated to clinical orthopedic surgery teaching and small animal surgery activities, including managing small animal patients and consultation in the Ontario Veterinary College-Health Sciences Centre (OVC-HSC). Orthopedic surgery experience will be regarded favorably, and flexibility to support the soft tissue surgery service, when required, is considered an asset. The proportion of clinical service time spent in orthopedic or soft tissue surgery is negotiable. On-call duties will be remunerated in addition to base salary, and the schedule will be shared with other faculty members in the surgery section, necessitating some orthopedic and soft tissue surgery after hours. The remaining time is to be spent on scholarly and service activities. The candidate is expected to develop and participate in independent or collaborative research. The successful candidate is expected to mentor and supervise small animal surgical residents and graduate students on a rotating basis. External remunerative activities are permitted within university guidelines. The OVC-HSC offers state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment including but not limited to a 1.5 Tesla high field General Electric MRI, CT, digital radiology, PACS system, state-of-the-art ultrasonography, scintigraphy, arthroscopy, total hip replacement, video endoscopy, rehabilitation facilities, and a 24/7 fully staffed intensive care facility.
