Job Duties The research team this position will be a part of focuses on interdisciplinary translational biomedical research to understand complex diseases better; our work is at the intersection of multiple datatypes including genomic, clinical, health, survey, and others, and involves coordination with multiple stakeholders types including, but not limited to, social and biological sciences, clinicians, and genetics. The Senior Research Associate ( SRA ) will oversee all statistical analyses within the team, providing oversight and guidance to team members on data management and organization and lab management in the absence of the principal investigator (PI). The SRA will design and plan analyses, oversee collaborations, supervise staff and trainees, manage the multiple data types, and fully execute research projects better to understand primary open-angle glaucoma and other complex diseases. The SRA will utilize statistical and bioinformatic techniques to perform data science responsibilities (including, but not limited to, management and leading internal and multi-site statistical analyses). The SRA will inform the PI of the progress of research projects and provide recommendations on experimental design and project plans. The SRA will also present data and findings at lab and scientific meetings, seminars, etc., prepare manuscripts, and contribute preliminary data for grant proposals. Expected objectives and responsibilities include: (i) lead statistical analyses of genetic data, including data within the high-performance compute cluster ( HPCC ) and on a virtual machine(s) as needed (e.g., for Veterans Affairs projects) and the coordination, oversight, and performance of internal and external (including for national and international consortia) analyses, providing thorough reports of justification for and results of analyses, (ii) data management (genetic, clinical, health, survey) via secure and thorough data storage, (iii) provide preliminary data for grants, and (iv) provide methods and results sections as needed for manuscript writing, and attend meetings as necessary both of the team and collaborators. Team meetings in-person or via teleconference in addition to co-authoring abstracts and manuscripts. The SRA will design and plan projects, oversee collaborations, supervise staff and students, manage genetic and health data, and fully execute research projects to ensure thorough and accurate statistical analyses. Data Management - 25% Oversee all statistical projects conducted by the team, including data (genetic, clinical, health, survey, etc.) collection, quality control, input, design, and maintenance of databases. Independently and with the PI, design, plan, and execute statistical projects to discern contributors (genetic, environmental, and other biological) to primary open-angle glaucoma and other complex diseases. Perform informed, up-to-date analysis of genetic and health data. Provide interpretation of various statistical outputs, develop predictions, and implement recommendations for study design. Develop and use bioinformatic and computational tools to analyze complex genomic datasets. Establish and manage the day-to-day analytical priorities of the research team. Presentations and Publications - 25% Assemble data and make publication-quality figures from analyzed data. Present data and findings at laboratory meetings and scientific meetings. Prepare manuscripts, and contribute preliminary data for grant proposals. Research Management - 50% With the highest level of integrity and responsible conduct of research, participate in writing manuscripts as a co-author for discoveries from research performed in the lab, together with the PI and other lab members. Coordinate and oversee statistical analyses performed by other team members, ensuring adequate computational resources, assisting with statistical design, and, when needed, analysis execution. Oversee the progress of these statistical projects, provide regular progress reports to the PI, and provide input and recommendations to the PI regarding significant developments in research projects. Ensure the PI’s data management and analysis strategy are aligned with best practices in the field, including the SRA STS’s independent analysis. With the principal investigator (PI), establish goals and objectives for the efficient and timely completion of projects. Meet regularly with the PI to review and set priorities, staff/trainee-related issues, and planning for future directions, including future research staff and priority identification. Develop new and updated techniques and protocols to advance research projects within the lab. Train lab members on new techniques. Develop and maintain computational pipelines, tools, and data products to summarize and capture genetic and genomic evidence and its interpretations as standardized knowledge to inform downstream analyses and progression decisions. Mentor and train lab staff and trainees (postdocs, graduate students); oversee research work and ensure projects are being completed according to the research plan. This will involve teaching other members of the lab statistical analysis and data management techniques, including trainees (students and postdocs). Assist and teach established and new research techniques to other lab members to facilitate their analyses. Assess, update, and develop new standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the computational arm of the lab.
