The Biology Department Laboratory Manager is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience for all laboratories. The Laboratory Manager is allotted a budget to train and delegate tasks to Work Study Students involved in the preparation of classroom laboratories with pre-made materials, or raw preparation of materials approved by Academic Environmental Health and Safety ( AEHS ) policy. The Laboratory Manager, Biology reports to the Biology Chair. Duties & Responsibilities 1. Coordinates the preparation and on-time delivery of materials performed by Lab Technicians/ Work Study students for laboratory courses, such as General Biology I and II, Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Microbiology, among others. See skills required below. 2. Delegate & oversee the following tasks to Work Study students, in accordance with AEHS guidelines & policies: a. Approved Raw Materials Preparation for scheduled lab classes b. Classroom Setup duties for laboratory courses c. Cleaning & organizing of laboratory classrooms (in alignment with AEHS policy) d. Disposal of all materials generated by classes (in alignment with AEHS policy) 3. Guide the Work Study Classroom Aids through laboratory procedure a week in advance of scheduled course activities to test materials and provide training, as needed 4. Work collaboratively with department professors to confirm lab schedules, update prep notes for core sequence courses, and identify laboratory needs. 5. Hire (in collaboration with the Chair) and train (in collaboration with dept. faculty when needed) work-study students in laboratory methodology & safety. 6. Maintain the Preparation Rooms and spaces in a way that is clean, organized, and aligns with all regulations in the AEHS plan. 7. Maintain living organisms and/ or the delegation of maintaining the living organisms through work-study positions to ensure proper care year-round. 8. Perform all procedures & inventory management in accordance with the Standards of Practices outlined in the administrative controls policy of the AEHS plan. a. Perform regularly scheduled Laboratory Services Starr facilities/safety checklist. b. Maintain a record of safety infractions by Work-Study staff (see AEHS Policy Article IV, Section 2) and report any infractions by instructors/professors to the Chair. c. Ensure that when leaving a lab space, the conditions are appropriately safe by completing all items on the exit procedure safety checklists. 9. Coordinate equipment maintenance and repair including regular PM. Maintain contracts and relationships with repair vendors. 10. Submit all required work-study forms/ paperwork to enrollment services. 11. Submit annual performance assessment of work-study students to the Chair. 12. Maintain up-to-date Saint Peter’s AEHS Right-to-Know certificate. 13. Monitor the Biology department budget and work with the department chair to achieve on-budget operations. 14. Write an annual needs assessment for laboratories due in October for the upcoming academic year, submitted to the Chair of Biology. 15. Update equipment depreciation schedule for all current equipment and submit to department faculty for a vote on replacement priority. Submit priorities and equipment schedules as a proposed equipment budget for 5-year projections to Department Chair. Qualification Standards 1. Requires experience in the safe preparation of chemical solutions. 2. Requires experience in microbiological techniques, including media preparation; culture of bacteria, fungi, algae, and protists. Preferably experience with mammalian cell culture. 3. Requires experience with molecular biology techniques including cloning, PCR , and spectrophotometric quantification. Preferably experience with Gene Expression techniques, Protein Purification and Analysis. 4. Requires a foundational understanding of biological classification, histology, and anatomy. 5. Prior experience with College-level laboratory preparations is a bonus. 6. Prior experience in the care of lab rodents is a plus. 7. Prior experience in the care of aquatic organisms is a plus.
