Objectives of this Role: Conduct fluid system modeling for applications in launch vehicles and turbomachinery using engineering software. Be a solution-oriented problem solver that exercises creativity and independent judgement in determining approaches to solve a wide range of technical problems with moderate supervision. Write technical reports, papers, proposals and prepare technical presentations for client meetings and conferences. Design, analysis, and test support for fluid/thermal projects within the Department, such as combustion, turbomachinery primary and secondary flows, aerodynamic design, supercritical CO2 power systems, heat exchangers, gas system design and modeling. Provide support for business development, proposal writing, executing the work, and reporting the results directly to the client. Write technical reports, papers, proposals, & presentations. Participate in technical conferences to promote SwRI business. Daily and Monthly Responsibilities: Use engineering software, such as CFD, for design and analysis of fluid problems for liquid propellants and their management, propellant system modeling, turbomachinery design, combustion devices. Perform engineering and scientific research and investigations to support projects in the industries of oil and gas, air-breathing propulsion, power generation, and liquid propulsion. Project tasks will primarily be related to fluid-thermal systems. Provide analytical or experimental support to more than one project in a team environment, which can include literature reviews, data collection, test design, developing computational simulations, deriving first-principles or correlative based solutions to problems. Interpret and present simulation results to project team and clients in a concise and clear way. Interrogate results for reliability and provide troubleshooting support for tests and simulations with a firm understanding of theories and concepts using a first-principles approach. Learn new technical skills to complete project work and develop custom scripts using Matlab/Python to perform calculations and automate parameter sweeps in commercial software tools and post-process large data sets. Requirements: Requires a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related engineering degree MS or PhD degrees in engineering are preferred, but not required 0-5 years: Conducting fluid and thermal systems analyses using commercial software, such as flow network solvers or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solvers 0-5 years: Firm understanding of the underlying physics of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, aerodynamics, or heat transfer 0-5 years: Design or analysis experience in space or launch vehicle propulsion systems, aircraft engines, turbomachinery, or gas turbines A valid/clear driver's license is required Special Requirements: Must be a U.S. person (i.e., U.S. citizen, non-U.S. citizen national, lawful permanent resident, asylee, or refugee) due to ITAR work in section.
