Posting Number SP003885P Position Title Research Scientist I or II, Bioinformatics Division/College University Research Department Institute for Modeling Collaboration & Innovation (IMCI) Location Moscow Posting Context Statement The Institute for Modeling Collaboration and Innovation ( IMCI ) is a multidisciplinary, collaborative unit with a goal to foster the convergence of research around modeling. It reports directly to the Office of Research and Economic Development. It strives to create an intellectual, cultural, and physical environment that fosters synergy and promote modeling-based research at the University. A key feature of IMCI is the Modeling Core: a unique group of talented postdoctoral researchers with diverse modeling skills. These PhD level research scientist provide modeling services to the community as part of Modeling Access Grants (MAGs). The central idea behind the Modeling Core is that when a group of bright, skilled people share ideas about each other’s work, it will generate stronger, more innovative research. Current areas of expertise include mathematical modeling, statistical modeling, geospatial modeling, and machine learning. Position Overview Research Scientist I Serves as an independent researcher, or a collaborator on a multi-scholar research initiative. May have lead responsibility for discrete components of a larger project under the general direction of a senior or principal researcher. Supports the Drug Discovery Working Group in the Institute for Modeling Collaboration and Innovation with their goal of developing novel antifungals to mitigate fungal diseases of Idaho crops. This researcher will undergo a thorough bioinformatics analysis of genome sequence data from specific fungal pathogens to identify biological processes and proteins as novel targets for the development of antifungals. Serves as an independent researcher, or a collaborator on a multi-scholar research initiative. May have lead responsibility for discrete components of a larger project under the general direction of a senior or principal researcher. Duties may include: • Performing complex scientific analyses • Adjusting experimental designs as necessary based on experimental data analysis • Directing the development of recommendations for project solutions • Performing peer review of scientific projects, studies, or applications and making recommendations • Preparing peer reviewed publications or presentations • Resolving complex project specific technical and regulatory issues • Establishing work priorities and performance standards, hiring, training, evaluating staff, assigning, and reviewing work • May be responsible for technical project management to include developing the scope of work, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, implementing field projects, and approving scientific documents • Participating in the development of grant proposals as named project contributor • Other duties as assigned Research Scientist II Designs and manages all aspects of a research portfolio complimentary to that of other research scientists or research faculty. Often maintains active research collaborations external to the university. Duties may include: • Planning and conducting research in accordance with stipulated protocols and quality and safety standards. • Performing complex scientific analyses. • Developing new methods and guidelines for procedures. • Directing the development of recommendations for project solutions. • Performing peer review of scientific projects, studies, or applications. • Developing technical scientific management guidelines. • Writing peer reviewed publications or presentations. • Resolving complex project-specific technical and regulatory issues. • Establishing work priorities and performance standards, hiring, training, evaluating staff, assigning, and reviewing work. • Responsible for technical project management to include developing the scope of work, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, implementing field projects, and approving scientific documents. • Participating in the development of grant proposals as named project contributor or primary investigator. • May have an independent research program that is complimentary to research objectives of a broader research group or department within the institution. • May include supervision of junior-level staff and students; does not include a full range of supervisory responsibilities. • Other duties as assigned Unit URL https://imci.uidaho.edu/ Position Qualifications Required Experience Research Scientist I Three years of research experience related to the domain of this position Research Scientist II Five years of research experience beyond receipt of doctoral degree Demonstrated record of research achievement Participation in the development and submission of sponsored project proposals Required Education Research Scientist I Doctoral degree in Bioinformatics or related field; A master’s degree plus an additional two years of research experience may be substituted for a Ph.D. Research Scientist II Ph. D in Bioinformatics or related field Required Other Additional Preferred Research Scientist I Demonstrating ability to work independently and with an interdisciplinary team. Record of 3 or more lead-author publications in peer reviewed journals in a relevant field. Record of writing proposals and acquiring externally funded grants. Experience with structural biology. Wet lab experience in microbiology, molecular biology and/or biochemistry. Research Scientist II Demonstrating ability to work independently and with an interdisciplinary team. Record of 10 or more lead-author publications in peer reviewed journals in a relevant field. Experience serving as PI or Co-PI on extramurally funded research. Record of writing proposals and acquiring externally funded grants. Experience with structural biology. Wet lab experience in microbiology, molecular biology and/or biochemistry.
