Text: PhD Student in Signal Processing Lulea Ref 4919-2022 Apply Luleå University of Technology experiences rapid growth with world-leading expertise within several research domains. We shape the future through innovative education and groundbreaking research results and drawing on our location in the Arctic region, we create global societal benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are carried out in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has an annual turnover of SEK 1.9 billion. Today, we have 1,815 staff and 19,155 students. In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. The department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering at Luleå University of Technology is looking for a PhD student to strengthen research carried out with the Signal Processing group. Current research in Signal Processing takes place in the areas of measurement technology and wireless communications, in close cooperation with industry. In our research we seek to understand how to infer information from measurement data and how to reliably convey such information from one place or time to another. We are looking for an ambitious and creative colleague who wants to contribute to cutting edge research in signal processing oriented towards the above profile area(s). The position as PhD candidate provides ample opportunity for interaction with industry, participation in academic conferences and experience from scientific publishing. The project will be carried out at Luleå University of Technology’s campus in Luleå. Project description Despite decades of successful development of cellular networks, rural regions around the globe are still largely lacking proper Internet acess. In the ongoing pre-standardization research stage of 6G, it is far from obvious whether and how 6G will be covering and connecting today's many unconnected areas and people. This project will develop new practical relevant measures for how to assess the problem of rural connectivity and the associated geographical inequalities. In particular we will formally combine radio network measures (cellular coverage, capacity, etc) with geographical measures (population density, mobility patterns, etc) into a novel, GIS-based methodology to analyse the societal impact of 6G (and previous generations) network deployments. We will use signal processing tools and methods to model, analyse and compare radio coverage maps over larger geographical regions and specifically assess mathematical and statistical fairness and (in)equality measures. The methodologies will be tailored for eventual use in the development of rural business cases and in the regulatory domain. The PhD project will be carried out within and financed by Arctic 6G, a collaborative research and innovation project within the Interreg Aurora programme that LTU will start together with partner universities in Finland: University of Oulu and Lapin AMK. Subject description The subject includes signal processing with emphasis on development and optimization of algorithms for processing single and multi-dimensional signals that are closely related to applications and applied research. Duties As a PhD student you are expected to perform both experimental and theoretical work within your research studies as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies. In addition, you can have the opportunity to try the teacher role. As a researcher, you work as a neutral party in many contexts, which provides a great opportunity to be involved in challenging development projects. Qualifications You must have an M.Sc. degree in Mathematics, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related areas, with a specialization in statistics, signal processing, mathematics, or similar. Experience with modern GIS-tools, radio propagation models and/or cellular systems is of merit. You have a strong interest in the societal aspects of Internet connectivity and preferably experience in our above profile research area. Communication and working in a group comes naturally.
