This position is part of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Fellowship entitled Singularities and Mixing in Euler flows, held by Professor Mahir Hadzic. The responsibilities of the post will include: carrying out vigorous, high-level research in the field of nonlinear partial differential equations with particular emphasis on questions of rigorous mathematical analysis of solutions to problems arising in fluid dynamics and nonlinear wave equations. Examples are the problem of a rigorous description of stellar collapse, mixing in two-dimensional flows, relativistic Euler equations, and others. Concrete research problems will be determined in discussion with the successful candidate, but they are likely to be related to one of the problems mentioned above. This post is available from 1 September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter and is funded for 12 months in the first instance. Key Requirements Candidates should either have a PhD or equivalent qualification in Pure mathematics or should be finalising their PhD or waiting for their viva date. Please note: Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent on award and confirmation of a PhD (or equivalent). If this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B, points 24 - 26 (salary £32,217 - £33,958 per annum inclusive of London allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis. The successful candidate should have a strong background in the rigorous mathematical analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE) as well as a strong research background in rigorous mathematical analysis in at least one of the following: nonlinear wave and wave-like equations, rigorous (i.e. theorem-proof based) fluid mechanics, or harmonic analysis. They will have a proven track record in research and publications commensurate with their career stage and demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and oral. An outstanding candidate will have interest and research experience with at least some of the following subjects: singularity formation in nonlinear PDE, existence and stability of self-similar solutions to nonlinear PDE.
