This PhD project aims to explore the ways in which a relatively simple ‘generalised Newtonian’ framework can be used to capture complex rheological behaviour, including so-called ‘normal stress differences’, that is more commonly associated with elaborate visco-elastic, frame-invariant constructions. In particular, the project will explore and analyse the way in which an anisotropic viscosity tensor can be used to capture some of this behaviour. The project will involve analytical and numerical work and includes the opportunity for a placement with the industrial partner SCR
Requirements: Applicants should possess a good honours degree (1st Class) in Mathematics, Engineering or Physics, or an equivalent qualification from other countries. Some background knowledge of fluid mechanics and non-Newtonian mechanics would be helpful, but not essential

The studentship will be based in the Department of Mathematics at UCL and will supervised by Dr Duncan Hewitt (UCL) and Dr Mahdi Davoodi (SCR). Studentship Description The studentship includes tuition fees at the Home rate, a stipend of approximately £20,983 per annum, which includes a £2000 per annum industry-provided supplement above the usual EPSRC stipend, and an allowance to support research and training costs, which is also enhanced by industrial funds. Stipends will be set by the UKRI standard rate which will be confirmed later in 2022. The studentship will be tenable for four years. The student will have the opportunity during the PhD to spend some time on a placement at SCR in Cambridge, with travel expenses covered.
