General Summary: The Digital Incubator & Advanced Analytics team is an inter-disciplinary team of Digital strategist, Product Innovators, Data Scientist and technical geeks. We provide digital thought leadership to inform our business strategies and incubate next-gen cloud-based digital and analytical offerings. As part of the Advanced data analytics team, you play a critical role in transforming Unum from a traditional insurance to an AI first, digital by design company. We aspire to build cutting-edge AI centric products that augment and extend human capabilities leveraging Computer vision, NLP, Deep Learning, Optimization technologies. The Principal Data Scientist will lead the ideation, design, development, and adoption of Machine Learning models to drive both qualitative and quantitative business outcomes. This is a high visibility role that will partner with business and Journey stakeholders to identify ML-AI opportunities to enhance operational efficiencies and effectiveness, improve financial risk, build precision in risk prediction and potential growth ideas. The role requires leading and mentoring junior data scientists in the execution of complex data science initiatives, translating business objectives into modeling outcomes; identifying data sources for use in modeling; designing and / or selecting the optimal choice of algorithms; and integrating models with production systems in partnership with machine learning engineers on cloud platform within an agile team framework. The successful candidate must have strong business acumen, a track record of developing large scale bespoke machine learning solutions that deliver significant business value, breadth and depth of expertise in probability, statistics and machine learning, the ability to drive business relationships, a strategic and technical mindset and the ability to lead and grow analytical teams. Job Specifications 8+ years of data science experience on similar scale (multi-team) products Preferred Master's degree or PhD from an accredited college/university in one or more of the following: Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Bioinformatics, Econometrics, Physics, Operations Research, or related fields Core Data Science experience: Applying statistical ideas and methods to data sets to answer business problems Experience in stochastic modeling, machine learning, and other advanced mathematical techniques - neural nets, simulation, graph analysis, deep learning, boosting methods, time series , Gaussian Process; Markov Models; Hierarchical Clustering; K-Means; Linear Regression; Logistic Regression; Monte Carlo Simulation; Neural Networks. Leverage a variety of data mining/data analysis methods, using a variety of data tools, building and implementing models, using/creating algorithms and creating/running simulations Experience with relevant open source and cloud tools such as Python, R, Jupyter, pandas, TensorFlow, and various AWS data services (or equivalent tools) Solid experience in at least one compiled language (e.g., Java, C or more or more) and one dynamic scripting language (Python, PERL, Ruby) Experience in deploying trained models on prem and on cloud Working knowledge of Application of Data Science principals and experience with data science methodologies Data warehouse and data lake technology (Teradata, Hadoop, No SQL, graph DB) Analyzing, designing, building, testing, implementing and supporting ETL solutions for multiple subject areas sourced from disparate data sources Communication skills, critical thinking, and strategic thinking skills above and beyond the technical knowledge and commercial application experience. Build analytical solutions and models by manipulating large data sets and integrating diverse data sources Perform ad-hoc analysis and develop reproducible analytical approaches to meet business requirements Perform exploratory and targeted data analyses using descriptive statistics and other methods and apply machine learning and statistical techniques to large data sets to find actionable insights Use complex algorithms to develop systems & applications that deliver business functions or architectural components Present results and recommendations to senior management and business users and communicate the business value of technical solutions Play a crucial role in maturing Advanced Analytics practices within Unum Architect and develop our data and machine learning ecosystem working to run experiments and deploy models to production environments and that operate effectively at scale Develop strategies and approaches to guard against bias in models and analysis to ensure solutions do not result in unintended impacts to vulnerable populations.
