Duties: This project seeks to look at classical technologies through the lens of the quantum computing, and quantum networks will develop a blueprint for a quantum/classical hybrid data centre. We are looking for a Research Fellow to conduct theoretical and experimental research in the area of: Integrated Photonic Switching for Quantum Computing Systems. The postholder will carry out research into integrated lithium niobate photonics switches including Lithium niobite processing, Integrated building block design, RF measurement techniques and Linear switching network. They will also be expected to prepare presentation materials for a variety of audiences and to contribute regularly to project technical reports and the publication of research results in leading conferences and journals publications
Requirements: Candidates should have a PhD in Electronic Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or related discipline (or about to submit a PhD thesis) as well as knowledge of integrated photonics design and characterisation and knowledge and experience of nanofabrication techniques. Candidates should have the ability to simulate and design integrated photonics components and experience in integrated photonics device and subsystems. Knowledge & experience of optical systems and including modelling and/or hands-on experimental research work is desirable

This is the first research project in UK and more broadly, to develop technologies and address the all-round challenges into designing, prototyping and operating quantum data centres based on photonic/optical technologies. UCL is leading the work on distributed quantum computing system architecture using optical networks as well as the effort on designing and developing optical switches, a key building block to any type of distributed computing and large scale systems. There are numerous leading UK industrial (ORCA, Riverlane, PQShield, KETS Quantum Security, BT, BP, Digital Catapult, NCC). and academic (Imperial, Bath, Southampton, Bristol) partners. They will join a team of three academics (George Zervas, Alejandra Beghelli and Alfonso Ruocco) and 11 PhD students and post-doctoral researchers working in the areas of optical/photonic networked systems for distributed classical and quantum computing and more broadly the optical networks group (ONG) that consists of 8 academics and 25 researchers. This position is based at UCL. The post is available immediately and funded for 2 years in the first instance. Further funding to support the post may be available.
