Position: Research Scientist, Al and Machine Learning

Duties: Machine and statistical learning algorithms, including optimization and approximate algorithms that address issues in algorithmic complexity, online or continuous learning, encoding and transfer learning, and reinforcement learning; Physics-informed AI, including the application of AI/ML to physical and biological sciences and the interface between AI and traditional modeling and simulation and theory; Computational scalability and performance of AI/ML algorithms, including both the ability to use computing hardware efficiently and the scaling of algorithms and HPC implementations; Uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analysis, validation, and explainability of AI/ML systems, particularly for high-consequence application areas, such as control systems; Statistics and data analytics, especially computational statistics and the ability to deal with sparse or missing data
Requirements: A Ph.D. in mathematics, statistics, computer science or related area; The ability to conduct independent and significant research and a demonstrated research capability with a publication record in AI/ML; Experience developing new business; Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with senior levels of client management and others involved in technical endeavors; Demonstrated ability to write research plans and proposals and to project a vision for future research relevant to AI and ML; A successful record of developing research partnerships and collaborative relationships with universities, industry, and research laboratories is necessary

In this role, you will be expected to lead and collaborate with scientists, within the group as well as within Oak Ridge National Laboratory, on a variety of intra-disciplinary research projects. Specific areas of research interest include: Machine and statistical learning algorithms, including optimization and approximate algorithms that address issues in algorithmic complexity, online or continuous learning, encoding and transfer learning, and reinforcement learning, Physics-informed AI, including the application of AI/ML to physical and biological sciences and the interface between AI and traditional modeling and simulation and theory, Computational scalability and performance of AI/ML algorithms, including both the ability to use computing hardware efficiently and the scaling of algorithms and HPC implementations, Uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analysis, validation, and explainability of AI/ML systems, particularly for high-consequence application areas, such as control systems. Statistics and data analytics, especially computational statistics and the ability to deal with sparse or missing data. The SDS Group consists of researchers focused on the analysis of natural and human complex systems and networks, operations research, artificial intelligence, inferential Bayesian statistics, discrete optimization, with an emphasis on DOE mission-critical applications, high performance/large-scale computing and large-scale data processes and applications. This position is within the Mathematics in Computation Section in the Computer Science and Mathematics (CSM) Division. The Mathematics in Computation Section creates the mathematics and algorithms that harness machines, ideas, and data, that enable far reaching scientific breakthroughs. CSM delivers fundamental and applied research capabilities in a wide range of areas, including applied mathematics and computer science, experimental computing systems, scalable algorithms and systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data management, workflow systems, analysis and visualization technologies, programming systems and environments, and system science and engineering. Major Duties and Responsibilities: Conduct high quality, basic and applied research projects and programs in artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithm with applications to biological and physical sciences Integrate research in AI/ML workflows and algorithms on high performance computing systems Collaborate with internal and external researchers on a wide variety of AI/ML research and projects Collaborate with application scientists inside and outside of the laboratory to advance the scientific mission of the group, laboratory, the Department of Energy and other sponsors Interact with the appropriate program offices and other agencies to develop and maintain program funding for basic and applied research in relevant areas of AI and ML Represent group-level work to review committees and outside bodies as appropriate Write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums Maintain membership in professional, academic, and research organizations. Basic Qualifications: A Ph.D. in mathematics, statistics, computer science or related area. Preferred Qualifications: The ability to conduct independent and significant research and a demonstrated research capability with a publication record in AI/ML, Experience developing new business, Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with senior levels of client management and others involved in technical endeavors, Demonstrated ability to write research plans and proposals and to project a vision for future research relevant to AI and ML, A successful record of developing research partnerships and collaborative relationships with universities, industry, and research laboratories is necessary, Experience in high-performance computing and software development, The ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms, Flexibility in research assignments, Ability to collaborate with scientists, engineers, and sponsors, Experience in one or more engineering or science applications of AI/ML, and Experience mentoring students and/or postdocs.
