The position is limited to three years and is a part of a long term strategic focus in this research area. Department of Science and Environment is one of four departments at Roskilde University. The Department conducts basic and applied research within mathematics, medical biology, physics, molecular biology, environmental sciences, and chemistry. Bachelor and master programs are offered within these areas. Research and education within the fields take place in a collaborative and interdisciplinary university environment. The Assistant Professor will be affiliated with Centre for Mathematical Modelling - Human Health and Disease, which is part of the Section of Mathematics and Physics within the Department of Science and Environment. One of the focus areas within the research centre is mathematical modelling and analysis of cancers of the blood forming system in close collaboration with clinicians. These cancers often require aggressive treatments and have a poor prognosis. Personalized prediction of treatment response and disease progression is of great interest. Up to now the impact of different mutations and regulatory signals on disease dynamics is insufficiently understood. Mathematical models can help to close this gap and to better understand fundamental disease mechanisms. This field of research at Roskilde University has recently been strengthened by a Lundbeck Foundation Fellowship (Principal Investigator, Prof. Thomas Stiehl, RWTH Aachen University and RUC, http://www.thomas-stiehl.de/) and the Assistant Professor will be an important collaborator in this project encompassing PhD students and faculty and co-supervised by Prof. Johnny Ottesen and Assoc. Responsibilities and tasks The assistant professor’s work hours will be distributed between research including publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations within mathematics and mathematical modelling e.g. related to the new master’s programme Mathematical Bioscience (https://ruc.dk/en/master/mathematical-bioscience). To a limited extent, this may also include performance of other activities. The ideal candidate is expected to complete the educational training program for assistant professors at RUC (up to 220 hours). The training program will give you pedagogical and didactic tools as well as familiarize you with the Roskilde University educational model called Problem-oriented Project Learning (PPL). Qualifications Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent within mathematics, mathematical modelling and computation or other closely related fields. The applicant must have qualifications in mathematics and documented research experience within one or more of the following areas: Mechanism based mathematical modelling of health and disease Applied mathematics Dynamical systems with applications in biomedicine Parameter estimation methods for dynamical systems Numerical and computational skills for analysing data sets At the time of appointment, successful candidates must be fluent in English for academic purposes.
