Position: Research Assistant in Wastewater Treatment

Duties: The positions will support several projects on pilot treatment of salty waters from different industries mainly with biological treatment or ozonation. Through the employment the candidates will become familiar with characterizing water treatment and experienced in using water analysis methods. The positions will be a strong beginning on a career in water technology and likely lead to a Ph.D study ore directly into being a research or application engineer in a water technology company
Requirements: As a formal qualification, you must have a master’s degree in engineering or equivalent; Experience and academic knowledge on biological and physic-chemical processes in wastewater; Overview of water chemistry and good computional skills; Experience with a majority of the analytical methods: HPLC, Fluorescens, COD, BOD, Nitrification inhibition, Microtox, genotox assays; Good knowledge of softwares for statistical analysis, including GraphPad-Prism or SigmaPlot; Fluency in English (written and verbal)

Apply online The Water Technology Section is one of the five sections comprising the Department: Land, Air & Water Resources, Residual Resource Engineering, Urban Water Systems, Environmental Fate and Effect of Chemicals, and Water Technology. Water Technology focuses on sustainable treatment of water for domestic, industrial and agricultural purposes. Resource recovery from water is also considered. Research is conducted at laboratory, pilot and full scale using both computational and experimental approaches. The purpose of the position is to assist with projects on the application of biological and chemical processes for the remediation of various types of water and on monitoring and optimization methods for sludge settling and dewatering. The position requires both experimental and computational work including maintenance of bioreactors, sampling and analysis of water and sludge samples, process modelling, data treatment and interpretation of the results. Responsibilities and qualifications Are you interested in boosting your experience and adding your input in water treatment methods? Then, perhaps you are our new research assistant. You will be responsible for the experimental research on industrial and domestic water remediation technologies, which includes designing, set-up and maintenance of lab-scale reactors, conduction of experiments and data interpretation and presentation of the results to supervisors and industrial partners. Specifically we expect you to: Design, set up and maintain lab-scale Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR), Fixed Bed Biofilm Reactors (FBBR) and activated sludge systems for organic carbon and nutrient removal as well as biocides degradation Characterize nitrification inhibition by salinity Perform biomethane potential (BMP) experiments for the estimation the digestibility and methane potential of various organic substrates Perform Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) experiments Perform sludge settling and dewatering experiments for the development of online optimization systems to reduce sludge handling costs Estimate parameters of secondary sedimentation gravity models and linking their variability with microbial diversity and other environmental parameters at full scale WWTPs Prepare technical reports to communicate results with relevant industrial partners Instruct and guide bachelor and master students Dissemination of the results in relevant national and international conferences Candidates should have a master’s degree in environmental engineering or equivalent. Prior laboratory research experience and solid experimental skills Experience and academic knowledge on biological and physic-chemical processes in wastewater including activated sludge processes, advanced primary treatment, secondary treatment and anaerobic digestion Good knowledge of modeling softwares, including Matlab-Simulink, Aquasim and/or WEST from DHI, for systems analysis and optimization and parameter identification Good knowledge of softwares for statistical analysis, including GraphPad - Prism or SigmaPlot Good knowledge on handling and use of Solitax turbidity and suspended solids sensors Fluency in English (written and verbal) Good communication skills and experience with the academic writing style The candidate should also: Enjoy transferring the know-how to others Has a team-oriented spirit and thrives on the collaboration in an international environment Be organized, able to develop several projects in parallel, and proactive.
