Oct 04, 2021 210000PV Science and Technology Facilities Council Salary: £39,748 to £44,166 (dependent on qualifications and experience) Plus a recruitment and retention allowance of up to £4,000 per annum Full time/Part Time (minimum of 25 hours a week) - fixed-term 3 year contract Closing Date: 24th October 2021 About Us CCP4 is a large project with the aim of designing and maintaining the state-of-the-art analysis software for macromolecular crystallography (MX). The CCP4 Software Suite is well-established and is distributed to over 12,000 academic and commercial sites around the world. CCP4 employs scientists and computer programmers who work at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), UK universities and other research institutions. CCP4 is based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, which provides a stimulating environment adjacent to the Diamond Light Source, Rosalind Franklin Institute and other developments on site. CCP4 facilitates research in the MX and adjacent areas and is effectively engaged in many of them. Close links are maintained with the World-Wide Protein Data Bank (PDB) and its European part, the PDBe at the European Bioinformatics Institute in Hinxton near Cambridge, UK. In this collaboration, CCP4 provides software solutions for the analysis, classification and 3d searches of macromolecular structures in the whole PDB (over 180,000 entries). Due to the rapid growth of the PDB and undergoing addition of 130 million predicted structures to the pool of available data, development of a new generation of efficient structure analysis tools, based on modern algorithms and hardware platforms, as well as advanced approaches to structure classification and associated functional annotation on a large scale, is required. Work Programme Applications are encouraged for an enthusiastic person to work in the core CCP4 group at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The jobholder will develop advanced algorithms for protein structure analysis, 3d searches, automatic classification, and functional annotation; implement and deploy them in a more general production system, supplying data to hundreds of thousands of structural biologists world-wide. The post is suitable for a computational scientist with good knowledge of numerical methods, developed C++ skills and taste for developing highly optimised algorithms. The successful candidate will be able to perform, jointly with other team members, the following tasks: Study the existing protein structure comparison algorithms, adapt and improve them Produce highly efficient codes for structure comparison in 3d and database screening Design and implement a robust system for the identification, analysis and classification of protein conformational states, binding sites and complexes Write scientific reports and publications, and present results at scientific meetings and conferences. No specialist knowledge in protein science or biochemistry is required, although experience in structural bioinformatics is a plus. The postholder will work closely with Dr. Eugene Krissinel from CCP4 Core Group, and PDBe scientists, as a member of distributed team with complementing set of skills and expertise.
