Position: Research Scholar in Energy Poverty Analysis and Modeling

Duties: Develop new conceptual and analytical models and measurement frameworks of energy access, energy poverty and energy transitions to inform energy and climate policies; Process large volumes of data related to infrastructure and energy access, individual energy choices and behaviors, and identify relevant underlying variables, methods, indicators, and necessary datasets; Develop future scenarios of equitable access to basic infrastructures and modern energy services that allow for decent living for all; Produce visualizations and maps to check results and communicate findings; Develop and document version-controlled collaborative modeling code that allows to re-process data and analyze datasets and model results; Coordinate data exchange and interoperability between different model teams; Publish relevant results in peer-reviewed journals and participate in scientific conferences and workshops
Requirements: PhD degree, or a master's degree combined with relevant research experience in energy access and energy transition analysis and modeling; Expertise in working with large datasets processing in R and STATA is essential. Experience working with open-source modeling frameworks in Python and GAMS is an advantage; Expert knowledge of the barriers and drivers of energy access in developing countries as well as awareness of other related development issues relating infrastructures to ensure decent living for all; Demonstrated expertise of numerical assessment and modeling of access to modern energy services using appropriate methods and datasets
   
Text: Deadline: 15 November 2021 APPLY 36/2021 APPLY 36/2021 Research Scholar in Energy Poverty Analysis and Modeling IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE) Program background The Transformative Institutional and Social Solutions (TISS) Research Group within the Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE) program at IIASA is recruiting a research scholar to work on the analysis and modeling of energy poverty, access, demand, and transitions, with particular focus on regions of the global South and vulnerable communities globally. The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of international scientists to develop and integrate a framework comprising several models on the topics of energy access and demand, electrification and clean cooking policies and their impacts, appliance diffusion, basic infrastructure and energy service provisioning, equitable and just energy transitions, and scenarios. The research will inform national and international policy efforts, such as those related to the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals and assess synergies and trade-offs between goals. The successful candidate must be able to work in, and have respect for, an intercultural environment, and IIASA core values . appointment terms The selected candidate should be available to take up the position as soon as possible in January 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. We offer an initial fixed-term, full-time (40 hours per week) employment contract for one year, with the possibility of extension thereafter. Applicants wishing to work part-time hours will also be considered. Duties will be carried out at the IIASA premises in Laxenburg, near Vienna in Austria. The corresponding profile for this opportunity is R2 according to the IIASA researcher profiles for research careers . IIASA does however, reserve the right to hire a researcher with a lower profile, and at a corresponding lower salary than the minimum stated below, if the qualifications and professional experience of the selected candidate do not meet the criteria described in the researcher profiles adequately. WE OFFER : A minimum gross annual salary of EUR 43,000.00 (full-time), which is exempt from income tax in Austria. The advertised salary is: Negotiable, based on the qualifications, skills and experience of the selected individual. Subject to deductions for health insurance and/or social security. Not directly comparable with other employers in Austria, due to the unique legal status and privileges granted to IIASA.
