Duties: Department 4.3 develops optical frequency standards with the aim of making a decisive contribution to a possible redefinition of the second, an SI base unit, and opening up new fields of application for optical clocks on Earth and in space. In order to make the advantages of these new clocks available to users at great distances, the department&#039;s Working Group 4.34 is conducting research in the field of ultra-high-accuracy optical frequency dissemination over fiber links. WG 4.34 is playing a leading role in the establishment of an international metrology fiber optic network. Furthermore, the group is developing new methods for optical frequency distribution over free-space links as part of the QuantumFrontiers cluster of excellence. The focus of your tasks will be: Collaboration in the international projects of the WG for high-accuracy frequency transfer; Independent optimization of the existing fiber links of PTB and provision of highly stable optical frequencies with relative uncertainties < 10 -19 to remote partners; Management and coordination of a work package in EMPIR’s TiFOON project; Planning, execution and evaluation of measurement campaigns for international clock comparisons in the Terra-Q SFA and in EMPIR’s ROCIT & TiFOON projects; Applying for third-party project funds in cooperation with the management of the WG and of the department; Development of optical free-space transfer with relative uncertainties < 10 -18 using continuous-wave and mode-locked lasers in the framework of the QuantumFrontiers Cluster of Excellence; Supervision of summer students, Master’s students, PhD students and visiting scientists; Documentation and publication of results, presentation of results at meetings and conferences
Requirements: University degree (Master’s degree/Diplom) and doctorate in the field of physics with an “A” overall grade (“sehr gut” in the German grading system); Extensive experience in the field of photonics, fiber optics and lasers; Extensive knowledge of time and frequency metrology; Knowledge of electronics, high-frequency engineering, control engineering and/or communications engineering; Very good command of written and spoken German and English; Experience in applying for external funding and in managing international projects; Leadership and/or management tasks may be assumed at a later date if an assessment center determines the candidate’s suitability for this purpose; Strong teamwork and communication skills; A high degree of responsibility, commitment, and self-organization, coupled with experimenting skills and the ability to improvise; Willingness to travel on business nationally and internationally; Willingness and physical ability to independently plan and conduct field measurements and experiments at external sites
