Duties: PTB uses synchrotron radiation of the electron storage rings Metrology Light Source (MLS) and BESSY II in Berlin-Adlershof for metrological purposes. In your thesis, you will investigate semiconducting materials and electronic components (e.g, from the field of power electronics) that are relevant to industry by means of infrared scattering scanning nearfield optical microscopy (IR s-SNOM). You will, in particular, examine the influence of defects and mechanical distortion on characteristic nearfield resonances and propagating surface polaritons, and you will develop models for determining local conductivity. Materials and components from various levels of the production process of leading industrial partners in the field of semiconductor technology will be available for this purpose. Moreover, contributions to compressed measurement procedures (compressed sensing, low-rank matrix reconstruction) are planned. Your tasks in more detail: Ensuring the scientific implementation of European third-party-funded projects in cooperation with leading partners from industry in the area of semiconductor technology; Designing, realizing and assessing experiments using IR s-SNOM; Modelling nearfield resonances for depth-resolved nanometrology; Ensuring the scientific mentoring of students
Requirements: You have completed your university studies in physics or a comparable subject and obtained an above-average degree; Experimental experience with synchrotron radiation and/or X-rays would be an advantage; You have an excellent knowledge of modern scripting languages (e.g., Python); You are able to take part in scientific project work and have an autonomous and reliable working style; You are a team player with excellent communication skills, and you are able to present scientific results at conferences; You are willing to travel within Germany and abroad within the scope of your assignment; You have a good command of both spoken and written English
