We are a charity, supported by the UK Government, in partnership with charities and industry. We work closely with the NHS and with public authorities across all nations and regions of the UK. Despite big improvements in healthcare in our lifetimes, today millions of people in the UK still live in poor health as they get older. Diseases like cancer, dementia, diabetes, and heart disease affect the lives of many people in our communities. Our goal is to create a world-leading resource for health research, to improve our understanding and spot the patterns of how and why common diseases start, so treatments can begin sooner and be more effective. Our plan is to bring together 5 million volunteers from right across the UK who will be asked to contribute information to help build one of the most detailed pictures we have ever had of people’s health. Researchers will be able to use this information to make new discoveries about human health and diseases. So future generations can live in good health for longer. Summary of the Role’s Main Purpose The Epidemiology Analyst will be part of a growing scientific team who will contribute to various key aspects in the design and development of the programme to ensure that we build a truly inclusive cohort from across the UK. As part of the epidemiology team, the successful applicant will apply their skills to help curate, assess, and refine recruitment pathways, develop and assess questionnaires, perform analyses on a broad range of areas including cognitive assessments and linked healthcare data, and provide epidemiological assistance to researchers who wish to use Our Future Health resources, amongst other activities that will benefit from an epidemiology perspective. Requirements Key Responsibilities The main responsibility of the Epidemiology Analyst will be to work with the Director of Epidemiology and the broader team to assist with the scientific aspects of Our Future Health including but not limited to: (i) design of the cohort/platform (ii) recruitment profile - including cohort diversity/inclusivity (iii) quality of data and refinements (iv) resampling strategies (v) outcome event ascertainment (vi) scientific protocols This will require you to: Have experience of working on study concept and design, statistical analyses of large-scale quantitative data, contributing to peer-reviewed publications Assist with the investigation and piloting of new data sources for record linkage purposes Contribute to the adaptation and development of new research methodologies and materials (as appropriate) for epidemiological analyses undertaken by the team Contribute ideas for new research projects Aid researchers worldwide on the available data and samples Attend national meetings and conferences, both as a representative of Our Future Health and to disseminate your research findings Key Technical Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Behaviours Essential: A PhD (or an MSc with 3+ years of relevant experience) in biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology, or a related subject. Excellent understanding of statistical concepts and methods, and their application to epidemiology. Experience in analysis of large complex epidemiological datasets using R, Python, or STATA. Experience in surveys and statistical considerations of study design. Ability to work independently as well as part of an interdisciplinary team. Ability to contribute ideas for new research projects and research income generation. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings. Desirable Experience in working on molecular epidemiology studies, including omics studies. Experience in contributing to publications/presentations. Experience in providing feedback of results to study participants. Experience in recruiting participants to studies. Please note we are also advertising for a Statistical Geneticist role.
