Position: Postdoc for Synthesis of Methanol

Duties: The project aims at synthesizing the most interesting candidates and testing them towards their ability to make methanol. The work will involve fundamental investigation of heterogeneous catalysts, including model systems, both under more conventional conditions e.g. high-pressure set-up (max 20 bars) with 100-300 mg loadings. Part of the project involves testing in conjunction with a high-pressure cell connected to a UHV system equipped with XPS, ISS, TPD. Visiting large scale facilities such as synchrotrons for EXAFS and High-pressure XPS measurements may be envisioned
Requirements: The candidate should have a PhD degree in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science. A significant part of V-SUSTAIN takes place at the section for Surface Science and Catalysis (SurfCat) at the Department of Physics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). It is mandatory that the candidate has extensive experience with UHV-based methods such as XPS, AES and catalysts testing. Having experience with combining UHV, high-pressure cells and measurements at synchrotrons is considered a particular great advantage

Apply online VILLUM FONDEN have granted 150 million DKK over the next 8 years to “ The Villum Center for the Science of Sustainable Fuels and Chemicals” (V-SUSTAIN). The clear aim of the centre is to phase out fossil fuels and thereby alleviate the negative impact the continuous use these have on the earth’s climate and environment. Responsibilities and qualifications The postdoc will work under the sub-group on thermal methanol synthesis which involves several post-docs and PhD students. The main objective is to synthesis methanol at such low temperature that the pressure can be lowered substantially. It could also involve ammonia synthesis. The work will be based on strong interaction with the theory group headed by Jens Nørskov, which is screening for new materials using DFT calculations for determining optimal catalysts.
