We are hereby announcing a PhD in Signal processing for multimode communication. This project is part of the Centre of Excellence Silicon Photonics for Optical Communications (SPOC) funded by the Danish National Research Foundation and established in 2015. The SPOC centre was established to aim at significantly advancing the state-of-the-art in ultra-high capacity optical communications and this PhD project will be at the heart of this activity. This PhD project will study signal processing for future optical communication systems. Spatial division multiplexing (SDM) will be a key technology to meeting the data rate demand in future optical networks. The PhD project will focus on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) signal processing enabling SDM optical communications. Specialized digital MIMO will be designed and optimized jointly with and for the optical multimode channels, incl. MIMO modules, built in-house in SPOC. Optical MIMO modules will include multiplexors and demultiplexors for multimode communication as orbital angular momentum (OAM) communication. Mode and core interference during multi-mode multi-core fiber propagation will also be studied. In order to maximize the data rates of these communication systems, MIMO designs will be combined with multi-dimensional constellation shaping and coding. The PhD project will be in close collaboration with other activities in SPOC, including activities on novel multimode optical communication. Your main tasks can be summarized as follows: Study conventional linear and nonlinear MIMO concepts Study optical SDM communication systems Design signal processing incl. MIMO transmitter and receiver processors for optical communication with SDM, Design coded modulation systems for maximized throughput of optical SDM systems, including constellation shaping and coding Participate in and contribute to novel communication system experiments You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
