Apply online The Department of Wind Energy has a vacancy for a 1-year research assistant position in the System Design, Optimization and Operation section (SYS) at DTU Risø Campus. This is a highly multi-disciplinary issue involving modelling of the non-stationary inflow field, aerodynamics, structural dynamics, structural stability, and control. SYS focuses on modelling, analysis and optimal design of system engineering solutions for complex systems in wind energy — with particular focus on the interplay between wind farm flow, dynamics and control of wind farm turbines and techno-economic assessment of wind farm design and operation. The research outcome is implemented in software tools and incorporated in courses, for the benefit of the wind energy community. This research assistant position will focus on the development, maintenance, and application of models for wind farm flow fields, to support the future development of the DTU TOPFARM platform for economical optimization of wind farm layout and control strategies including consideration of grid ancillary services. This is a crucial element of the overall section and department activities in research, education, and innovation. Responsibilities and tasks Your work will mainly be focused within analysis and modeling of wind farm flow fields, for both research and commercial projects within the System Design, Optimization and Operation Section at DTU Wind Energy. Specific tasks will include: Development and adaptation of models for wind turbine and farm physics and costs for the TOPFARM wind farm optimization framework including PyWake and HyDesign Executing wind farm optimization studies in a range of applications including but not limited to: wind farm layout optimization, design of wind farm collection systems, hybrid plant sizing and physical design, forecasting, etc. Eventually, writing papers for conferences and journal publications, supporting development of research proposals, and participation on commercial projects for improving wind farm optimization practice by industry In addition, you are also expected to support the activities on the overall maintenance, documentation, training and support of the collective TOPFARM-PyWake software framework and model suite. The research aims at creating new valuable knowledge within wind energy —particularly focusing on complex systems — and implementation of such, within department activities and the industry, in both the short and long term. Part of our activities are performed in collaboration with the industry, as well as other Danish and foreign research institutions. In addition, the research assistant is also expected to contribute to the following tasks: Contribute to the ongoing projects in WES with reporting and administration Offer support and assistance in teaching the wind energy courses relating to systems engineering and optimization and developing course materials if required Co-supervise our wind energy master students relating to wind farm systems engineering and optimization and define the potential projects for the master students Qualifications Candidates should have an MS degree in engineering or equivalent. Experience with programming languages such as C, Python, MATLAB and Mathematica, is an advantage. Experience with advanced multi-disciplinary analysis and optimization (MDAO) methods using both gradient, heuristic, meta-heuristic and mixed methods is preferable. Experience with uncertainty quantification and statistical analysis is also preferable.
