Text: The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is a multidisciplinary centre for climate research located in Hamburg, Germany. It has an internationally recognised reputation in climate modelling. The MPI-M is located in the heart of one of Europe's most lively and vibrant cities. It provides a highly international and interdisciplinary environment for conducting scientific research as well as access to state-of-the-art scientific facilities. Subject to the official Grant Approval by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the MPI-M is now opening two positions for Scientific Programmer (f/m/d; W096) to contribute to the development of a new generation of Storm-Resoving (km-scale) Earth System Models (SR-ESM). The successful applicant will contribute to build the technically most ambitious simulation system imaginable to be used on the largest compute systems available in the world. Over the coming years, the ICON climate simulation system will be restructured and rewritten using modern software development concepts, to allow for scalable and agile development of the scientific code to prepare it for applications on heterogeneous exascale HPC systems. These two positions will lay the foundation for the work on the new modular and performance portable code to be developed from the existing code base with a growing team into a full climate simulation model. The successful applicants will work in a vibrant scientific environment, embedded in large technical and scientific projects at the forefront of climate science across institutions in Germany (especially in cooperation with DKRZ) and Europe. As a member of the MPI-M the applicants will be afforded a wealth of opportunities including participation in various soft skill and personal development trainings.
