Duties: One of the key aspects the Velocity Department deals with consists in checking the conformity of traffic monitoring instruments - such as what we colloquially call speed cameras or speed traps - with the requirements of the German Measures and Verification Act. for this purpose, our department has been operating mobile and stationary reference measurement facilities for vehicle speed on public streets and has continuously been contributing to developing the state of the art in this field by conducting its own research. Piezo- and optical waveguide-based sensors are currently used in PTB's stationary reference facilities. Enhancement by means of camera-based measurement techniques is in preparation. Your work will focus on: Enhancing the existing vehicle speed detecting hardware to improve its real-time capabilites (edge computing); Developing a software solution to control the measurement hardware; Developing smart offline evaluation procedures (incl. assessment of data quality and defect detection), and, where necessary, procedures for merging data with other measurement channels (e.g. video sequences); Developing procedures for future vehicle classification and tracking and for integrating weighing-in-motion systems; Releasing the research results at conferences and in publications
Requirements: You have completed your university studies in communication engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering or a comparable field and have obtained at least the grade good (Master's or German Diplom); You have an extensive knowledge of and experience in programming; You have knowledge of and experience with IT-aided real-time detection of measurement values (e.g. by means of microcontrollers or industrial PC systems); Knowledge and/or experience in the following fields would be an advantage for the later phases of the project: automated evaluation of video sequences; merging sensor data; machine learning; You are a team player with excellent communication skills; You are able to work independently and are highly committed; You have a good command of both spoken and written German and English; You must be physically fit for working in a laboratory and for performing measurements along public roads and in the vicinity of road bridges
