Research is expected to concentrate on the analysis and processing of various biological systems. In particular, research is to be expected on the use of alternative forms of energy. The full potential of electrochemistry, electrobiosynthesis, and photo energy still remains to be exhausted for a more efficient utilization of microorganisms and their metabolism. In addition, electrochemical processes represent promising approaches towards sustainable and energy-efficient separation processes in biotechnology

Moreover, applicants should have leadership experience, be able to work in a team, and to have the qualification to carry out the teaching activities above. In Division I - Biology, Chemistry, and Process Engineering - we offer you a permanent W3 Professorship for Electrobiotechnology starting on April 01, 2023. The tasks of the professorship will include research, teaching, and innovation in the field of electrobiotechnology and related fields in bioprocess engineering. Research is expected to concentrate on the analysis and processing of various biological systems. In particular, research is to be expected on the use of alternative forms of energy. The full potential of electrochemistry, electrobiosynthesis, and photo energy still remains to be exhausted for a more efficient utilization of microorganisms and their metabolism. In addition, electrochemical processes represent promising approaches towards sustainable and energy-efficient separation processes in biotechnology. A potential application might be the use of (regenerative) energy to produce high-quality synthesis components up to lipids, proteins and enzymes. Potential applications are a. o. basic and fine chemicals, food, biopharmaceuticals and the sustainable use of CO2. In this context, the development of innovative reactor concepts and of modern process design and process control methods will be of crucial importance. For this purpose, a quantitative analysis and evaluation of the processes as well as consideration of the aspects of energy and raw material sources will be desired as well as indispensable aspects of energy and material sources, productivity along the value-added chain, and waste management have to be considered. For this, advancements in process analysis, modelling, data management, and digitization in biotechnology research and industrial application will be indispensable. The professor will be obliged to teach German and English courses for the bachelor’s and master’s programs of the KIT Departments of Chemical and Process Engineering and of Chemistry and Biosciences. The professor is expected to take part in undergraduate education in the bachelor’s and master’s programs Bioengineering as well as Biology by giving lectures in the modules “Biologie im Ingenieurwesen” (biology for engineers) and taking over the lecture on “Enzymtechnik” (enzyme technology). The professor is also expected to organize practical courses and to teach in the specialization subject “Biotechnologie” (biotechnology) and master electives. The professorship will be associated via a membership of the cooperative management board of KIT’s Institute of Process Engineering in Life Sciences (BLT). You must have comprehensive experience in the areas mentioned and have made excellent scientific achievements of high international visibility. Moreover, applicants should have leadership experience, be able to work in a team, and to have the qualification to carry out the teaching activities above.
