Position: PhD scholarship in Small Mechanical Devices for Gut Sampling

Duties: The PhD student will work in the area of designing and fabricating polymeric devices for gut sampling using technologies such as 3D printing. You will design, develop and fabricate new types of mechanical devices with added functionalities such as pH triggered geometrical changes. You will explore new fabrication technologies; mainly outside our cleanroom using e.g. embossing and 3D printing. You will test gut sampling device performance in collaboration with IDUN project partners and animal facilities. You have the ability to drive the project and achieve ambitious goals
Requirements: You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. The ideal candidate has an experimental background in some of the following topics: micro- and nanofabrication techniques, materials; especially polymers and polymer fabrication and mechanical engineering. Apply online The aim of the PhD project is to explore and develop new technologies and methods for realizing biocompatible polymer-based devices for collecting samples (bacteria and biomarkers) in the gut. Gut sampling is an exciting new field with the potential for exploring local microbiota/biomarker composition and its influence on human health. We have previously worked a lot with so-called micro-containers and will now expand into new designs with added functionalities. The PhD candidate will be a part of the IDUN research center, led by Prof. Anja Boisen at DTU Department of Health Technology. IDUN is a large research center with over 40 members, that focuses on development of micro and nanotechnology based sensors, detection systems and drug delivery devices. Research field The PhD student will work in the area of designing and fabricating polymeric devices for gut sampling using technologies such as 3D printing. Responsibilities and qualifications You will design, develop and fabricate new types of mechanical devices with added functionalities such as pH triggered geometrical changes. You will explore new fabrication technologies - mainly outside our cleanroom using e.g. embossing and 3D printing. You will test gut sampling device performance in collaboration with IDUN project partners and animal facilities. You have the ability to drive the project and achieve ambitious goals. The work will be carried out within the framework of the Center of Excellence - IDUN ( www.idun.dtu.dk ). You will play a role in the drug delivery part of the research section, interacting with several members working in different disciplines, such as biology, microfabrication, pharmaceutical science and polymer science. The project is highly interdisciplinary and we expect that you enjoy teamwork and are good at coordinating you work with your colleagues.
