Position: Postdoc in the project “Human milk oligosaccharides’ impact on maturation of the gut microbiota”

Duties: Design and perform experiments to understand the scope and the mechanisms of HMO utilisation by distinct groups of the human gut microbiota; In collaboration with the PhD student and the project collaboration partners map the HMO utilisation potential in silico and express and characterize key proteins involved in this metabolic facet; Design anaerobic growth experiments to evaluate growth preferences of diverse microbiota members on complex and defined relevant substrates; Determine the three-dimensional crystal structures of key protein players identified in the project; Take part in scientific, dissemination and collaboration activities related to the project and the research group as well co-supervision of students at different levels
Requirements: Candidate should have a PhD within Protein chemistry. Ideal candidate profile: Strong background in enzymology and protein biophysical chemistry; Experience in carbohydrate chemistry and carbohydrate active enzymes; Experience in anaerobic microbiology, and growth and competition assay of various diverse strict anaerobes of the human gut microbiota; Excellent scientific track record of original high impact publications of relevance to project

Apply online A three year postdoc position is available in the Protein Glycoscience and Biotechnology group, Protein Chemistry and Enzyme Technology section at the Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine. A major focus of this group, headed by Prof. Maher Abou Hachem , is to perform impactful work on understanding the molecular basis of glycan utilisation by key members of the human gut microbiota and to develop biotechnological application for enzymes from this ecological niche. The project’s goal is to bring insight into the role of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) in the maturation of the human gut microbiota.
