Position: PhD position in the field of AI enhanced computer vision for visually impaired and blind people

Duties: You are going to assist our research on autonomous navigation for visually impaired and blind people in the joint PhD Network in Data Science of ZHAW and University of Zürich. Your areas of responsibility will include: Research on vision algorithms capable of localizing a user in complex environments in order to provide navigation from point A to point B; Research on 3D scene understanding in static and complex dynamic environments, interacting with elements in the scene, e.g., by grasping objects or getting on escalator stairs; Research on incremental state estimation in real time in order to prevent injuries due to collisions with static and dynamic objects; Research on novel interfacing metaphors in order to communicate with the user. Nearly blind people could perceive objects by highlighting them on a high contrast head mounted display while blind users require fine grained translation to interact with the environment, such as opening a door or mind the step
Requirements: You hold a master's degree in Computer Science, specifically in the areas of computer vision, AI/Deep Learning and autonomous navigation; You enjoy staying ahead of technology and continually strive to improve your skills; You are fluent in spoken and written English as well as some German and are interested in scientific work. This includes proposing novel ideas, scientific analyses and evaluations, writing reports, and presenting your results
