Position: PhD Thesis „6G Reflective Intelligent Surfaces“

Duties: As member of our multidisciplinary, international team, you will investigate reflective intelligent surfaces (RIS) as novel technology for future 6G wireless communications systems in the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency band; During your research, you will learn how to create wireless wave propagation models for RIS and how to calibrate/validate their outcome with practical channel sounding experiments in the mmWave domain; Furthermore, together with your team, you will work on the development of a machine learning environment to control the RIS for highly reliable wireless communications in time-critical scenarios; Based on your research results and by exchanging views with our researchers, you will make optimisation proposals on the RIS design with respect to power consumption, training overhead and cost; You will also have the opportunity to gain an insight into research activities with industry partners to explore 6G RIS application scenarios
Requirements: Completed studies (MSc./Dipl. Ing.) with profound knowledge in electrical engineering or applied physics; Knowledge in numerical simulation tools (Matlab, Python) and software defined radio systems is an advantage; Ability to combine theoretical reasoning with practical applications and experimentations; Ability to integrate in a multinational research team; Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English, readiness to acquire German language skills

Our Center for Digital Safety & Security in Vienna invites applications for a: PhD Thesis „6G Reflective Intelligent Surfaces“ Our international AIT-PhD Programme , with more than 200 international students, offers you the possibility to conduct your doctoral thesis in cooperation with the Technical University Vienna (TU Wien) and in collaboration with our national and international partners. During this PhD project you will be supervised by our highly specialized researchers and you will have the chance to become an expert in the 6G field, while investigating novel wireless 6G communication links between machines with low-latency and low error probability in challenging environments. As member of our multidisciplinary, international team , you will investigate reflective intelligent surfaces (RIS) as novel technology for future 6G wireless communications systems in the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency band. During your research, you will learn how to create wireless wave propagation models for RIS and how to calibrate/validate their outcome with practical channel sounding experiments in the mmWave domain. Furthermore, together with your team, you will work on the development of a machine learning environment to control the RIS for highly reliable wireless communications in time-critical scenarios. Based on your research results and by exchanging views with our researchers, you will make optimisation proposals on the RIS design with respect to power consumption, training overhead and cost. You will also have the opportunity to gain an insight into research activities with industry partners to explore 6G RIS application scenarios. Your research results will enable highly reliable wireless mmWave communication links with ultra low latency in challenging scenarios with dynamic blocking. With your accumulated know-how and innovative results, you will contribute to the further development of our current research projects. You will publish results in international conferences and journals and will continuously build up your network in research and industry.
