Duties: The mission of the lab is to understand mechanistic principles responsible for virulence and persistence of important human pathogens. Towards these goals, we use a range of cutting-edge techniques including genetic engineering, CRISPRi screens, proteomics, metabolomics, biochemistry and structure-based approaches, microfluidics, tissue engineering, and live cell imaging. The project involves developing and using microfluidic devices, single cell tracking and quantitative image analysis to delineate the stochastic properties of a toxin/antitoxin module and its role in antibiotic tolerance of the human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Requirements: We are looking for a highly motivated, rigorous and creative scientist who wants to use quantitative means to address fundamental questions of stochastic control in microbes and how this relates to bacterial physiology and antibiotic resistance. The ideal candidate has a Master’s degree in nanoscience, physics, or in quantitative aspects of microbiology. Applicants with a background in physics, engineering, and/or computer science, and a strong interest in microbiology and infection biology are strongly encouraged to apply. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is expected, along with good written and oral communication skills in English

It consists of 30 research groups and 500 employees that investigate how molecules and cells create life, spanning the scale from atom to organism. Founded in 1971, the Biozentrum has been the birthplace of many fundamental discoveries in biology and medicine, spawning several Nobel Laureates. An SNF-funded PhD position is available in the laboratory of Prof. Urs Jenal at the Biozentrum, University of Basel, Switzerland. We offer The position is funded by a grant of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and offers the opportunity to join a multidisciplinary research group including microbiologists and cell biologist with strong expertise in studying molecular aspects of important human pathogens.
