Conducting research for a changing society: This is what drives us at Forschungs zentrum Jülich. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, we aim to tackle the grand societal challenges of our time and conduct research into the possibilities of a digitized society, a climate-friendly energy system, and a resource-efficient economy. Research data is the foundation of scientific discovery and an essential component of societal progress. Establishing the provenance of data and ensuring its re-usability and long-term availability increases the value, transparency, and visibility of research. That is the mission of the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC): the goal of this association-wide platform is to develop and establish novel concepts, services, and workflows that allow to enrich complex and heterogeneous research data with metadata in the different phases of their creation. This will make our research data FAIR and generally usable, thus securing its value in the long term, e.g. for use in areas like Big Data analytics and data mining using artificial intelligence. The Institute for Advanced Simulations - Materials Data Science and Informatics (IAS-9) - will be the HMC Host-Lab at the Jülich Research Center. In this multidisciplinary group activities span from the investigation of material properties by means of numerical simulations and theoretical approaches, to general data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, to the development of methods and workflows in research data management and metadata handling. The IAS-9 will host a team of HMC software developers who will operate at the interface of scientific data analysis and research data management. In close coordination with the HMC Hub Information, strategies, and tools such as web-services and databases will be developed and made accessible to the Helmholtz community. An essential part of this will be the demand-specific development and adaptation of structured vocabularies and ontologies. For this purpose, tailor-made technical tools will allow scientists to integrate the collection of metadata into their daily research routine with minimal additional effort.
