Position: Senior Bioinformatics Research Assistant

Duties: Assist users with data handling for bioinformatic applications and accessing computational facilities at NIOZ for MMB and for the entire NIOZ; Troubleshoot problems and answer computational/bioinformatic questions from users; Maintenance of local copies of public biological databases; Interact with the IT department regarding maintenance of software on the computing servers; Support bioinformatic research projects by performing bioinformatic analyses, including high-throughput omics data and presentation of results to collaborators with diverse backgrounds; Design, implementation and maintenance of bioinformatics pipelines for common data analysis workflows (e.g. metagenomic data analysis)
Requirements: We are looking for a highly motivated team player with a background in bioinformatics, computational modeling and scientific computing, with a Bachelor degree in one of the mentioned areas. Due to the international character of the institute and department, excellent English communication skills are expected. A proven track record in research software development and in developing bioinformatic pipelines (preferentially using Snakemake), experience in working in a Linux environment, expert skills in several programming languages (at least two of: java, python, R, bash) and database management (MySQL, SQL) are essential
   
Text: NIOZ Our jobs The Royal NIOZ Career NWO-I Science Jobs Marine research excellence The Royal NIOZ Experience Contact HR Senior Bioinformatics Research Assistant LOCATION: ROYAL NIOZ TEXEL VACANCY ID: 2021-17 CLOSING DATE: May 8 2021 The Department of Marine Microbiology and Biogeochemistry (MMB) studies microbial communities and their functioning in all types of marine environments, from estuaries to the deep ocean, from tropical coral reefs to polar regions, and from the present to the past. The Department has well-equipped molecular, chemical and microbiological laboratories, and state-of-the-art facilities for bioinformatics, flow cytometry, single-cell analysis as well as isotope and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The Department is international and dynamic and has approximately 80 members, including PhD students, postdocs and Master students from more than 15 different countries. A group of sixteen staff scientists and fifteen research assistants (junior and senior) form the core of the Department. Nearly half of the core staff was recruited in the last three years leading to a young, vibrant, diverse and multidisciplinary department. Description We are looking for a permanent enthusiastic bioinformatician for our MMB department. The optimal candidate has expertise in setting-up large-scale pipelines for the analysis of omics data and is motivated to support researchers and students with regard to their various bioinformatics needs including high-throughput biological sequence data analyses. Specifically, the person filling up this position would be responsible for: Assist users with data handling for bioinformatic applications and accessing computational facilities at NIOZ for MMB and for the entire NIOZ Troubleshoot problems and answer computational/bioinformatic questions from users Maintenance of local copies of public biological databases Interact with the IT department regarding maintenance of software on the computing servers Support bioinformatic research projects by performing bioinformatic analyses, including high-throughput omics data and presentation of results to collaborators with diverse backgrounds Design, implementation and maintenance of bioinformatics pipelines for common data analysis workflows (e.g. metagenomic data analysis) Benchmark and evaluate pipeline performance, suggest, and implement improvements Produce technical content and documentation about pipelines, computational infrastructure and analyses performed for users Making large and complex biological results available in custom databases Being involved in teaching bioinformatics skills in workshops developed at NIOZ Requirements We are looking for a highly motivated team player with a background in bioinformatics, computational modeling and scientific computing, with a Bachelor degree in one of the mentioned areas. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Being appointed by the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research means being appointed by the Netherlands Foundation of Scientific Research Institutes (NWO-I); A temporary contract for the duration of one year, leading to a permanent contract subject to satisfactory performance; The salary depends on qualifications and experience (scale 9); 42 days of leave, 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, good pension provisions and flexible working hours; Our conditions of employment are based on the Collective Labour Agreement of the Employers' Association of Research Institutes (WVOI).
