Project Integrated structural health monitoring model for demountable and reusable elements in a design for deconstruction approach using BIM (SHM4REUSE). The successful applicant will be integrated in the research group LSS, a research group which currently counts six doctoral students and two PostDocs. The doctoral student will be a member of the Doctoral School for Science and Engineering (DSSE) offering a Doctoral Program in Civil Engineering Sciences aiming to provide interdisciplinary and internationally competitive research training. Your Role This PhD position takes a key role within the project Integrated structural health monitoring model for demountable and reusable elements in a design for deconstruction approach using Building Information Modelling (SHM4REUSE), jointly funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) and Compagnie De Construction Luxembourgeoise (CDCL) under the FNR-BRIDGES scheme. The ultimate goal of the SHM4REUSE is to facilitate a more sustainable construction industry by providing a scientifically-backed methodology to effectively identify and re-employ reusable components extracted from deconstructed buildings. In the context of the foreseen research project, the successful candidate deals with the development of a novel condition assessment model of structural components in a building, which can be used to promote the reuse of them based on time-dependent analysis in the framework of a circular economy. The different influencing parameters on the material degradation have to be investigated. Experimental works in the laboratory have to be planned and executed to support the research plan. Advanced numerical models with nonlinear material laws have to be developed within the framework in order to enable reliable representation of the nonlinear behavior, material degradation and the corresponding formation of damage.
