Text: PhD position (f/m/d) Einrichtung: Research Training Group 2088 “Discovering Structure in Complex Data: Statistics Meets Optimization a (ID 100816) Ansprechpartner: Frau Diana Sieber Besetzungsdatum: ab sofort Veröffentlichungsdatum: 10.02.2021 The Research Training Group 2088 “Discovering Structure in Complex Data: Statistics Meets Optimization and Inverse Problems” at the University of Göttingen offers a PhD position (f/m/d) in Applied Mathematics starting as soon as possible for a period of three years. The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale (E13 TV-L) with 75 % of the regular working hours (currently 29.85 hours per week). About us: The RTG 2088 develops new mathematical concepts for the efficient reconstruction and classification of relevant structural information in data sets. In doing so, we benefit from an interplay between approaches in statistics, optimization and inverse problems. We offer an interdisciplinary qualification program that equips our graduate students with a broad set of skills for analyzing data - also beyond the scientific scope of our RTG. The project: Elastic energy regularization for inverse obstacle problems: A frequent task in nondestructive testing and medical imaging is the estimation of the shape and location of an unknown object. In contrast to commonly used radial parameterizations of star-shaped domains, this project studies the general case of arbitrarily shaped surfaces in 3D and the use of the surface bending energy as a regularization term for the attendant inverse problem. This formulation allows for both smooth and polyhedral surfaces. The project will be jointly advised by Profs. Hohage ( hohage@math.uni-goettingen.de ) and Wardetzky ( wardetzky@math.uni-goettingen.de ). Your profile: • excellent or very good M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in mathematics or physics, • strong interest in differential geometry and/or inverse problems, • good command of written and spoken English, • ideally, experience in programming.
