Position: Research Associate in heterogeneous multi-robot interaction for planetary interaction

Duties: She or he will p erform the following tasks: Research in heterogeneous multi-robot interaction for planetary exploration focusing on the following topics: Multi-robot interaction; Descentralized decision-making; Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT); Multi-agents arquitectures; Sensor-fusion, State estimation; Autonomous Navigation, Path and/or trajectory planning, SLAM; Perception for robotics; Develop real-time solutions using ROS; Setup and upgrade robotic systems for planetary exploration; Providing support in setting up and running experiments in the SnT LunaLab facility; Cooperate with other projects and colleagues at SpaceR to extend the used of the developed approaches to planetary and orbital robotics; Participating in research proposal drafting and project deliverables; Collaborate in ongoing international and national projects; Disseminating results through scientific publications and conference presentations; Assisting in the organization of relevant workshops and demos
Requirements: Qualification: The candidate should possess a Ph.D. degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or affine. With a proven record of accomplishment in the development and testing of autonomous navigation of aerial robots; Strong development skills in C++, python and ROS; Experience with sensor fusion, optimization and state estimation; Be familiar with machine learning apporachs for perception and robotics; Multi-robots cooperation and/or coordination; Autonomous Navigation, Path and/or trajectory planning, SLAM; Intelligent Agent Technologies IAT; Robot setup and maintenance; Openness to do interdisciplinary work, as FiReSpARX project spans boundaries between economics, management, and computer science; Commitment, team working and a critical mind; Experience supervising Master students and theses; Experience with European projects (FP7/H2020). National projects and industrial projects; Language Skills: Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English are required

The successful candidate will join a young, strong and motivated SpaceR research group focused on increasing the autonomy of aerial, planetary and orbital robotics for on-earth applications, space exploration, on-orbit servicing and manufacturing, and space resource utilization. This innovative research group is lead by Prof. Miguel Olivares-Mendez. The candidate will carry out research under the framework of the FinTech/RegTech in Space for Trustful Autonomous Robotic Interactions - FiReSpARX project. The project focuses on the development of decision-making algorithms based on Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) for multi-robot interaction for space applications. This will require openness to do interdisciplinary work, as the project spans boundaries between economics, management, and computer science. The challenge will be to get a sufficient understanding of the topic from all these disciplines to combine them in an innovative way that makes a significant impact. The candidate will need to be able to apply existing knowledge to the given use case in FiReSpARX, extend knowledge in the specific use case, and to derive generalizable knowledge from the design process. The gained insights should make impact in space robotics and also for in the multi-robot systems (MRS) area.
