Duties: You will work to improve the emittance and optics measurements with a wire scanner. You will also investigate the option to do fast measurements with the screen by correcting its resolution in the measurement data analysis. To obtain the screen resolution, the beam size measurements from the wire scanner and the screen need to be compared. The graphic program for the emittance measurement (written in python) will be extended to accommodate the option of wire scanner measurements. We expect that this work will significantly improve the FEL performance after a standard machine setup due to a better optics matching
Requirements: You are a physics, engineering or IT student (minimum 4 semesters); You have basic skills in programming; You are motivated in performing programming tasks, and you have a general interest in the science or technology of particle accelerators; You are open-minded, communicative and enjoy working in an international team; You have not yet completed your Master’s thesis

X-Ray free-electron lasers (FEL) emit radiation at very short wavelengths down to the 0.1 nm level, a region outside of the reach of conventional laser systems. The pulses can reach peak powers of several tens of gigawatts and typically have durations between a few and 100 fs. The light generated at X-Ray facilities is used to advance research areas such as physics, chemistry and biology. SwissFEL is a new free-electron laser at PSI, operating since 2017. An electron beam, well matched and of low emittance, is of a great importance for the FEL performance. YAG screens and wire scanners are installed at different locations at SwissFEL to measure the emittance and the transverse parameters (optics). The screens offer 2D single-shot information and have a resolution of about 25 µm, while wire scanners provide only 1D multi-shot information but have a much better resolution in the order of 1 µm. Only the wire scanners can be used to precisely reconstruct the emittance and optics before the undulator, since here the beam sizes are smaller or close to the resolution limit of the screens. Emittance and optics measurements with wire scanners have already been performed, but the measurement procedure requires further automation for use in standard operation. For this project we are looking for a Trainee Improvement of beam optics and emittance measurements at SwissFEL Your tasks You will work to improve the emittance and optics measurements with a wire scanner.
