Position: Trainee

Duties: You will develop an approach to reconstruct the LPS at any position of the accelerator, based on the measurements at the available locations. You will implement this feature in a programming code, preferably written in Matlab or Python. You will experimentally validate the method at the locations where the actual diagnostics are available
Requirements: You are a physics, mathematics or a computer science student (minimum 4 semesters); You are highly motivated in performing numerical simulations, programming and particpating in experiments; You have a general interest or/and experience in accelerator or/and free-electron lasers physics; You have good skills in programming; You are open-minded, communicative and enjoy working in an international team; You have a good command in spoken and written English; Good understanding of the phase space concept, linear mapping, accelerator transport and/or experience with particle tracking codes would be an advantage; You have not yet completed your Master’s thesis

SwissFEL is the new X-Ray free-electron laser (FEL) facility at the Paul Scherrer Institute and one of the five existing X-Ray FELs in the world. Diagnostics of the longitudinal phase-space (LPS) of the electron beam is essential for the operation of an FEL such as SwissFEL. Due to hardware limitations, LPS diagnostics are only possible at specific locations along the accelerator. Moreover, LPS diagnostics can be limited due to resolution issues, in particular for the ultra-short pulse operation.
