Duties: Investigation of possible interfaces between Monte-Carlo (MC) codes for radiation transport simulation and machine learning (ML) methods; Investigation of the suitability of neural networks for coupling with MC simulations; Identification of a radiation transport code suitable for coupling with ML methods; Development of a MC simulation that interacts with a neural network; Proof-of-principle for a concrete application, e. g. dose calculation in flexible anthropomorphic numerical phantoms; Presentation of the results at international scientific conferences; Writing of scientific manuscripts and publication in scientific journals
Requirements: You have obtained a university degree (Master's or German "Diplom" ) in one of the disciplines mentioned above with a grade among the top 20%; You have a good basic knowledge of physics and are proficient in programming; Knowledge of machine learning or neural networks is an advantage; You have a good command of spoken and written English; You have excellent communication skills; Willingness to expand your knowledge and commitment are required as much as the ability to well-structured and goal-oriented work, independent and in a team; Aptitude to write and present scientific papers; You are willing to travel on business in Germany and abroad

December 2020 The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the National Metrology Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science. Division 8 "Medical Physics and Metrological Information Technology" is looking for a doctoral candidate in physics, computer science or mathematics to join us as soon as possible. The position is available on the basis of a 3-year fixed-term contract. The renumeration will be in accordance with renumeration group 13 TVöD Bund (85 %). You will be employed at our Berlin site. Within your doctoral thesis you will investigate to what extent Monte-Carlo simulations of radiation transport can be accelerated by coupling them with machine learning methods, using the intermediate results of the simulation to train a neural network.
