The positions will be in the group of Dr. Arijeet Pal. The current focus in the group is on the phenomenon of quantum thermalisation, many-body localization, quantum scars, time crystals, and quantum measurements. The project investigates these phenomena in isolated and open quantum systems. More broadly the work in the group brings together tools and ideas from condensed matter physics and quantum information science. UCL hosts a fertile research environment in condensed matter and atomic physics (Professors Andrew Fisher, Andrew Green, Frank Kruger, Tania Monteiro, Marzena Szymanska) and quantum information science (Professors Sougato Bose, Toby Cubitt, Jonathan Oppenheim, Luis Masanes). The London Centre for Nanotechnology and the Quantum Science and Technology Institute provide ample opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration on a broad range of questions. Duties will include carrying out research within the general areas of the project; in addition to collaborating in the preparation of publications, the Research Fellow will be presenting papers and representing the group at conferences and workshops. The successful candidate will be expected to begin by September 2021. Duration of the post is for 2 years in the first instance. Key Requirements The successful applicant will complete/ has completed a Ph.D. in Physics or related fields. Show expertise in quantum many-body physics. Candidates should have a strong publication record. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Exhibit effective collaborative skills. Skills in quantum dynamics of isolated and/or open quantum systems will be advantageous. Knowledge of numerical techniques of tensor networks and exact diagonalization for quantum dynamics is desirable.Post holders are expected to conduct research in collaboration with Dr. Pal. There will be opportunities to mentor Ph.D. and Masters students. Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary £31,542-£33,257, per annum, inclusive of London Allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
