Position: Research Associate

Duties: Demonstrate research independence in the conception and execution of methodological research; Develop and implement statistical machine learning and computational statistical methods for handling spatiotemporal data; Disseminate replicable and reproducible data scientific workflows and help train practitioners in the use of new methods; Communicate research findings to other researchers, through conference and journal publications, and policymakers, through international meetings
Requirements: Hold a PhD or equivalent level of professional qualification in statistics, computer science, or a related field; Experience in statistics and machine learning; Original research results in computational statistics or statistical machine learning; A broad and strong background in applied statistics or applied machine learning; Strong programming skills in R or python; Ability to carry out original research and to produce published research papers; Ability to perform exploratory data analysis

ST-SML draws in equal parts on Bayesian spatiotemporal statistics, scalable kernel methods and Gaussian processes, and recent deep learning advances in the field of computer vision. You will be based in the statistics section of the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London. You will help lead a multiyear programme of methodological research, to tackle pressing public policy problems in collaboration with leading international organisations. You will regularly collaborate with key external partners, including the Stan Development Team, the World Food Programme, UNAIDS, and NASA. You will regularly collaborate with key internal partners, including the Medical Research Council (MRC) Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis in Imperial’s world-renowned School of Public Health. In addition to research, you will help train practitioners in partner organisations. You will also have the opportunity (if desired) to participate in the supervision of postgraduate students and teaching at the doctoral level. The expected start date is 15 October 2020 or thereafter. *Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range, £35,477- £38,566 per annum.
