Apply online A PhD Scholarship in regional oceanography is available at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) with starting date 1st December 2020. The project will be carried out in the Section for Oceans and Arctic in Kongens Lyngby, Denmark. The scholarship is part of a collaborative multidisciplinary research effort on documenting regional oceanographic change along the East Greenland shelf. The area spans spans from Cape Farewell in the south to the Fram Strait in the north. The region is influenced by: Atlantic waters from the southeast; Polar water exiting the Arctic via the East Greenland Current; and shelf waters modified by sea ice and Greenland ice sheet meltwater. The spatial and temporal distribution of these waters are changing and having an impact on all levels of ecosystems. The final project description will be developed in collaboration with supervisors Professor Colin A. Stedmon, Professor André Visser and Senior Scientist Jesper Boje. This project is linked to exisiting research (H2020 ECOTIP) and advice (ICES WGIEAGS) activities carried out at the insitutre and the candidate will therefore be part of and interact with a large colabroative network of international scientists. The research spectrum of the Section for Oceans and Arctic covers oceanography, population ecology, observation technology and the Arctic. The research into oceanography integrates biological, physical and chemical parameters’ interactions in the ocean, ranging from individual plankton to regional seas. We focus on understanding the key processes that govern the structure and function of pelagic food webs, as well as climate and ecosystem interactions. The research in population ecology establishes how processes affecting individuals shape populations and ecosystems. The purpose of DTU Aqua is to provide research, advice and education at the highest international level within the sustainable exploitation of living marine and freshwater resources, the biology of aquatic organisms and the dynamics of ecosystems as well as their integration in ecosystem-based management.
