Position: Research Associate (Postdoc) in mechatronic design and control of in-Lab Orbital Robotic systems

Duties: The successful candidate will join the SpaceR group led by Prof. Miguel Olivares-Mendez. She/He will contribute to projects on Orbital Robotics research and in the construction of a unique 2D Zero-gravity facility in an interdisciplinary project. The candidate is demanded to perform the following tasks: Research position on mechatronic design, setup and control of floating platforms, and setup and configuration of robotic arm systems for a 2D Zero gravity facility of orbital robotics on the following topics: Design and develop a floating platform providing constant air-flow to remove friction between the platform and floor; Setup and configure robotics arms to emulate different on-orbit scenarios; Floating platform, robotic arm and manipulator control; Hardware and Software integration with other development at the 2D zero gravity facility; State estimation for the developed robotic systems; Develop real-time solutions using ROS; Setup and upgrade the design and the control systems based on the requirements of the project; Establish a strong connection with other research groups; Providing support in setting up and running experiments in the SnT LunaLab, Concurrent Design Facility (CDF) and SatComLab; The position holder will be required to perform the following tasks: Researching the predefined areas; Participating in research proposal drafting and project deliverables; Collaborate in ongoing international and national projects; Disseminating results through scientific publications and conference presentations; Assisting in the organization of relevant workshops and demos
Requirements: Qualification: The candidate should possess a Ph.D. degree in Automation, Robotics, Mechatronic or Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or affine. With a proven record of accomplishment in the development and testing on: Experience on design and control of compressed air systems; Experience on robot manipulators, state estimation and control; Experience on CAD design, C++, python and ROS; Hands-on robotic setup and maintenance; Commitment, team working and a critical mind; A background on orbital and/or planetary robotics will be an asset; Experience with ESA, European projects (FP7/H2020), national projects and industrial projects; Language Skills: Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English are required
