Text: PhD positions (all genders welcome) Einrichtung: Research Training Group 2088 (ID 100708) Ansprechpartner: Frau Sieber Besetzungsdatum: ab sofort Veröffentlichungsdatum: 13.07.2020 The Research Training Group 2088 at the University of Göttingen invites applications for 2 PhD positions (all genders welcome) in Applied Mathematics in projects B4 and B6 (Supervisor: Prof. Gerlind Plonka-Hoch). Both positions start as soon as possible and are limited to 3 years. The salary is based on TV-L E13 with 75% of the regular working hours (currently 29.85 hours per week). About us: The RTG 2088 develops new mathematical concepts for the efficient reconstruction and classification of relevant structural information in data sets. In doing so, we benefit from an interplay between approaches in statistics, optimization and inverse problems. We offer an interdisciplinary qualification program that equips our graduate students with a broad set of skills for analyzing data - also beyond the scientific scope of our RTG. More information about the RTG 2088 is available on our website: http://www.uni-goettingen.de/rtg2088 . The projects: In project B4, we study the covariance matrices of stationary processes. We aim to employ a Bayesian framework and impose smoothness on the spectral density. In project B6, we investigate connections between numerical schemes for exponential analysis and non-convex optimization algorithms in the context of sparse approximation of signals. For more information about the projects, please contact Prof. Gerlind Plonka-Hoch: plonka@math.uni-goettingen.de . Your profile: You should - hold an excellent or very good M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, - have a strong interest in Fourier analysis, harmonic analysis, mathematical signal and image processing, and/or Bayesian statistics, - feel comfortable with writing and speaking in English, - ideally have experience in programming. How to apply: Your application must include - a motivation letter for the preferred project (max. 1 page), - a curriculum vitae, - your degree certificates. The University of Göttingen is an equal opportunities employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply in fields in which they are underrepresented.
