Position: Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Ecology and Environmental Science

Duties: We are looking to appoint a Lecturer in Ecology/Environmental Science to conduct research and research-led teaching that covers, complements and extends our strengths in environmental science and related interdisciplinary areas within SNES. SNES undertakes a broad spectrum of scientific research and individuals with experience and willingness to work on and develop interdisciplinary projects are strongly encouraged to apply

Salary: £35,845.00 - £68,251.00 Closing Date: 17 July 2020 The role We are looking to appoint a Lecturer in Ecology / Environmental Science to conduct research and research-led teaching that covers, complements and extends our strengths in environmental science and related interdisciplinary areas within SNES. We welcome applicants with research interests and experience in Ecology / Environmental Science. SNES undertakes a broad spectrum of scientific research and individuals with experience and willingness to work on and develop interdisciplinary projects are strongly encouraged to apply. You will be expected to work collaboratively and develop research projects across academic research groups. Research interests may include a focus on developing innovative teaching methods. You will be expected to undertake research-informed teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and contribute to teaching in areas linked to terrestrial and marine Ecological and Environmental Science, including teaching in the field. You will also be expected to promote the school and University at both national and international levels, as a research and teaching centre of excellence and contribute to specific academic administrative roles as defined by senior management. To develop a research portfolio through application for external research funding, including developing collaborative research proposals across the School, Faculty or University and with external organisations. To deliver high quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (including field-based teaching) as directed by the Head of School, with a focus on the Biology / Environmental Science degree programmes. To complete and pass the teaching and learning University training programme (NEPS) or to have an equivalent qualification. To conduct and publish high quality research in peer review journals. To be a member of relevant academic and teaching groups, supporting collective activity in teaching and research. To represent the School and University at national and international meetings and conferences to disseminate research and/or scholarship outputs. To participate in the management and administration of relevant modules within the School, and contribute to the development of new initiatives in these areas. To supervise postgraduate research students. To provide mentoring, academic guidance and pastoral support to students in support of their learning experience. To act in a collegiate manner, making a positive contribution to maintaining and enhancing a working environment that upholds equality, diversity and inclusivity.   The Person Knowledge, Skills and Experience Essential Research and teaching experience relevant to ecology / environmental science. A strong track record of relevant published research. Research skills that draw on a broad range of field-based and data analysis methods. Experience of applying for research grant funding. Experience of presenting at national and international conferences / meetings. Excellent knowledge of core areas of teaching and training in ecological / environmental science. Experience of conducting research, both independently and as a member of a team, and engendering a strong research culture. Experience of actively developing collaborative research projects within and across research groups, and with external parties that deliver impact. Experience of lecturing, teaching field sampling methods, seminar teaching, assessment and supervising research projects. Evidence of research leadership and proven management skills. Desirable Understanding of the national and international funding landscape in the relevant discipline. Evidence of securing research funding from a range of sources (UKRI, Charities, Government Departments, agencies and the private sector). Experience of supervising staff and PhD students to successful completion. Experience of lecturing, running seminars and a range of other innovative teaching techniques, assessment and supervising research projects. Experience of providing mentoring, academic guidance and pastoral support to students. Experience in programming using the statistical software R for both research and teaching. Good networking skills and the ability to develop productive links with fellow professionals from other organisations and agencies with whom the University interacts. Willingness to contribute to ongoing outreach activities that may include visits, public lectures and contributions to events and summer schools, including short periods away from Newcastle.
