Position: Data Engineer/Software Engineer

Duties: In collaboration with colleagues in Science IT, the Photon Science Department and the Laboratory for Neutron and Muon Instrumentation, you will play a key role in integrating PSI experiments to the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and help shape Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) science data. You will also join the recently funded EU collaborative project ExPaNDS and benefit from an international initiative working on a common goal; Your role will be centred on the PSI data catalogue, SciCat, as we expand its capabilities to meet the full data lifecycle from harvesting real-time information during experiments through to publishing FAIR data as part of the ExPaNDS and EOSC community. You will use your experience or interest in science to work with the experimenters to define key experiment parameters, associate this metadata with big data measurements and processing results and work with European partners to help publish the data; Your main tasks will include: Develop ontologies (concepts and categories) for main application domains of photon and neutron sciences to standardize metadata used in metadata catalogues; Implement ontologies in SciCat data catalogue and facilitate implementation in other data catalogues; Provide API for SciCat data catalogue based on standards defined by PaNOSC and ExPaNDS projects; Perform landscape and requirements analysis for metadata catalogues used at European photon and neutron sites (as part of ExPaNDS project); Manage and support roll out, training and operations of data catalogue
Requirements: As either an enthusiastic and talented early career or experienced professional, you should be motivated to work at the interface between science and computing technology. You will have previous experience or a deep knowledge of full stack web application development; in particular, for single-page applications based on NoSQL databases, node.js and Angular software stacks. You will ideally have experience of scripting languages such as Python and developing and using science ontologies; You hold a university degree (or equivalent practical experience) in computer science or in a natural science with a high component of computer science. A very good command of written and spoken English is a must, while knowledge of German is an advantage. If you are a strong team player with excellent communication skills and sense of responsibility, this position will offer you a great opportunity to develop your career in an exciting and highly multidisciplinary environment
