Apply online Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most versatile medical imaging platform that exists today, but interaction between the RF signals and the human body obstructs the full potential of state-of-the-art MR imaging, especially when moving towards higher magnetic field strength. The increased interactions cause images to show severe shading and poor quality over large areas unless fully compensated. The proposed research project will investigate how to resolve and control these RF field interactions in order to unleash the full potential of ultra-high field MRI. This include innovative RF coil design which are capable of shaping the static magnetic field (B0 shimming) as well as the transmit field (B1 shimming). This novel B0 and B1 shim enabled MRI transceive array coil will be used for greatly improved structural, functional and metabolic imaging at 7 tesla MRI. To achieve this we have teamed up in an exciting collaboration between Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance (DRCMR) and Technical University of Eindhoven (TU/e). The PhD project is part of the EuroTech Universities Alliance stipend from DTU, which promotes knowledge transfer between the institutions. Center for Magnetic Resonance ( www.cmr.healthtech.dtu.dk ) conducts research in MRI and NMR. Our research is conducted in collaboration with universities, hospitals and healthcare companies both nationally and internationally. Our main educational responsibility is within the BSc and MSc program in BioMedical Engineering in collaboration with the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen. Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance is one of the leading research centers for biomedical MRI in Europe (www.drcmr.dk). We are an interdisciplinary research centre and our mission is to triangulate MR physics, basic physiology, and clinical research. Approximately 70 researchers from a diverse range of disciplines work together to pursue basic and clinically applied MR research with a focus on structural, functional, and metabolic MRI of the human brain and its disorders. DRCMR houses the first and only human ultra-high field MR system in Denmark, which will be used in this project. In addition, there will be co-supervision from the TU/e team in the Netherlands throughout the project and an extended stay of approximately 6 month at TU/e is therefore a natural part of this PhD project.
